CHAPTER 7 — THE GRANDFATHER IN THE DARK

“Noah!”

My scream tore through the underground station.

I ran toward the tunnel where Daniel had disappeared, but Gabriel caught my arm.

“Emily, wait!”

“Let me go!”

“They want you to chase them.”

“My son is down there!”

“I know!”

“Then move!”

I shoved him away.

Gabriel stumbled backward.

For a second, anger flashed across his face.

Then he looked at me and saw the tears.

His expression softened.

“I know what it's like.”

I stopped.

He whispered:

“I know what it's like to have someone take your family away.”

I looked toward the tunnel.

“Noah is all I have.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward himself.

“You have me.”

I stared at him.

The words should have comforted me.

They didn't.

Not yet.

Because my son was gone.

And nothing mattered more.

I ran into the tunnel.

Gabriel followed.

Behind us, the emergency lights flickered.

The countdown continued somewhere above.

00:06:42.

We reached a fork.

Three tunnels.

No signs.

No footprints.

Nothing.

I turned toward Gabriel.

“Which one?”

He closed his eyes.

“Left.”

“How do you know?”

“I don't.”

“Then why did you say left?”

“Because Daniel always uses the oldest route.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I grew up here.”

I froze.

“You grew up underground?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Not here.”

He pointed toward the darkness.

“Under the Reed estate.”

I stared.

“You were hidden there?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“My mother.”

I swallowed.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel wanted me dead.”

“And she protected you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say she was killed?”

Gabriel stopped walking.

“Because she was.”

“By Daniel?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Gabriel's voice became quiet.

“Your grandfather.”

I froze.

“Which grandfather?”

“The man we're following.”

My stomach tightened.

“The man who took Noah.”

Gabriel nodded.

“He is not Daniel.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Daniel is your father.”

“You said my grandfather.”

“I said the man who took Noah is your grandfather.”

“Then who is he?”

Gabriel looked at me.

“Thomas Reed.”

I couldn't breathe.

“My grandfather is alive?”

“Yes.”

“I thought he died.”

“He did.”

I stared.

Gabriel sighed.

“Officially.”

I almost laughed.

“Apparently nobody in my family knows how to die.”

He didn't smile.

“Thomas Reed created the original system.”

“The encryption?”

“Yes.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“The Black Ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Then why would he want Noah?”

“Because Noah is the first child born with both genetic keys.”

I looked down the tunnel.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your grandfather can finally access everything.”

“Why couldn't he before?”

“Because the system requires two bloodlines.”

“Reed and Caldwell.”

“Yes.”

“And Noah has both.”

“Yes.”

“But I'm a Reed.”

Gabriel nodded.

“You carry one.”

“Ryan was a Caldwell?”

“No.”

I frowned.

“Then where does the Caldwell blood come from?”

Gabriel stopped.

“Your mother.”

I stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“Your mother was adopted.”

“What?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“Thomas Reed.”

My mind raced.

“So my mother wasn't a Reed by blood.”

“No.”

“She was a Caldwell.”

Gabriel nodded.

“The last surviving Caldwell daughter.”

I felt sick.

My entire family tree had been fabricated.

The woman I thought was my mother had belonged to the enemy family.

And the family I thought was hers had adopted her.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas wanted control of both bloodlines.”

I swallowed.

“And Noah?”

“Completed the plan.”

“What plan?”

Gabriel looked at me.

“To create an heir no one could challenge.”

I felt cold.

“He planned Noah?”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your grandfather had been waiting for someone like him for decades.”

We reached the end of the tunnel.

A steel door stood ahead.

Gabriel touched it.

“It's locked.”

I looked around.

“How do we open it?”

He pulled out a small blade.

“This won't help.”

“Then what will?”

He looked at me.

“The key.”

I touched the silver key still hanging from my neck.

“You said it was a tracker.”

“It was.”

“Then why does it open this?”

“Because it does both.”

I inserted it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Beyond it was a staircase.

We descended.

The air became warmer.

Then we heard voices.

A child's voice.

Noah.

“Mommy!”

I ran.

“NOAH!”

Gabriel grabbed me.

“Wait.”

I froze.

We reached a hidden observation room.

Through the glass, I could see a large chamber.

Noah was sitting in a chair.

He wasn't restrained.

That almost made it worse.

Daniel stood beside him.

And another man stood across the room.

Older.

White hair.

Perfect black suit.

A cane in one hand.

I knew him immediately.

Even though I had never met him.

Thomas Reed.

My grandfather.

He looked at Noah.

Then toward the hidden camera.

And smiled.

He knew we were watching.

“Emily.”

My blood froze.

Gabriel whispered:

“He knows.”

Thomas spoke again.

“Come inside.”

I didn't move.

“Give me my son.”

Thomas smiled.

“You always were impatient.”

I stepped toward the door.

Gabriel stopped me.

“He wants you angry.”

“I don't care.”

“That's exactly what he wants.”

I looked at him.

“What do you suggest?”

“Think.”

“My son is in there.”

“Yes.”

“Then I'm going.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Then we're going together.”

We entered.

Thomas turned.

For a moment, he simply looked at me.

Then he smiled.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

I stared.

“You killed her.”

His smile disappeared.

“She was weak.”

“You killed my brother.”

“He was dangerous.”

“You tried to kill Gabriel.”

“He survived.”

I pointed at Noah.

“Give him to me.”

Thomas looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“He belongs here.”

“He belongs with me.”

“He belongs to his blood.”

I stepped forward.

“He is my son.”

Thomas smiled.

“That's the problem.”

“What?”

“You think being his mother gives you ownership.”

My blood boiled.

“It gives me everything.”

“No.”

Thomas tapped his cane against the floor.

“It gives you responsibility.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Did you tell her?”

Daniel shook his head.

Thomas sighed.

“Of course not.”

I looked between them.

“Tell me what?”

Thomas walked toward Noah.

My body tensed.

He stopped beside my son.

Noah looked frightened.

“Do you know what you are?”

Noah shook his head.

Thomas crouched.

“You are the first person in our family who can choose.”

Noah frowned.

“Choose what?”

Thomas smiled.

“Who controls the world around you.”

I stepped forward.

“Don't talk to him like that.”

Thomas ignored me.

“You have something inside you.”

Noah looked at me.

“Mommy?”

“Come here.”

He stood.

Thomas grabbed his wrist.

I lunged.

Gabriel blocked me.

“Wait.”

Thomas didn't hurt Noah.

He simply turned his wrist.

A small scanner appeared from the wall.

Noah's finger touched it.

The machine beeped.

The screen turned green.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

My stomach dropped.

Thomas smiled.

“Finally.”

The chamber lights changed.

Screens illuminated around us.

Thousands of financial records appeared.

Names.

Accounts.

Companies.

Transactions.

The Black Ledger.

Thomas had opened it.

Without the countdown.

Without the key.

Without the drive.

Without anything.

Just Noah.

I stared.

“How?”

Thomas looked at me.

“Because he's mine.”

I felt sick.

“He's not yours.”

“He is my blood.”

“He is my son.”

“And your son is my heir.”

Thomas walked toward the central console.

“Everything your mother and I built…”

He gestured toward the screens.

“…will belong to him.”

I shook my head.

“You don't get to decide.”

Thomas smiled.

“I already did.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Father.”

Thomas turned.

“What?”

“This isn't what we agreed.”

Thomas stared at him.

“You agreed to nothing.”

“You promised me control.”

“I promised you survival.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“You used me.”

Thomas smiled.

“Of course.”

Daniel raised his gun.

Thomas didn't react.

“Put it down.”

Daniel didn't.

Thomas looked at him.

“You still think weapons give you power.”

Daniel's hand trembled.

Then a gunshot echoed.

Daniel dropped his weapon.

I turned.

Victor stood behind him.

He had blood on his shirt.

His face was pale.

“Enough.”

Thomas looked at Victor.

“You.”

Victor raised his weapon.

“You're not taking the boy.”

Thomas smiled.

“You've betrayed me again.”

Victor shook his head.

“I never belonged to you.”

Thomas laughed.

“You belonged to Rebecca.”

Victor froze.

Thomas continued:

“She was the only person who ever made you believe you could be better.”

Victor's eyes filled with tears.

“Don't say her name.”

Thomas looked at me.

“Your mother knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

“She knew Noah's father.”

I froze.

Victor closed his eyes.

Thomas smiled.

“Ask your mother.”

“She is dead.”

“No.”

My heart stopped.

Thomas whispered:

“She isn't.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Rebecca is alive.”

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You're lying.”

“Why would I?”

“To control me.”

Thomas smiled.

“Because you have spent twenty-five years believing your mother was dead.”

He leaned closer.

“Wouldn't you like to know where she is?”

I couldn't speak.

Gabriel looked at Thomas.

“You promised she was dead.”

Thomas turned.

“I promised you nothing.”

Gabriel's face became furious.

“You told me she was killed.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

“Where is she?”

Thomas smiled.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Not here.”

“Where?”

Thomas looked at me.

“Ask Emily.”

I stared.

“Ask me what?”

Thomas nodded toward Noah.

“Ask yourself why your son has the same birthmark as Gabriel.”

I looked at Noah.

Then at Gabriel.

Then at Thomas.

He continued.

“Because Gabriel isn't your brother.”

I froze.

“What?”

Gabriel's face went pale.

Thomas smiled.

“He is your son.”

The world disappeared.

I couldn't breathe.

Gabriel stared at him.

“No.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“I'm her brother.”

“No.”

Thomas looked at me.

“Gabriel is Noah's father.”

My knees almost gave out.

I looked at Gabriel.

His face was frozen.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Thomas continued.

“Daniel knew.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You promised…”

“You were never told the entire truth.”

I looked at Gabriel.

He looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“I didn't know.”

My voice broke.

“You didn't know?”

“No.”

“You said you were my brother.”

“I believed I was.”

Thomas smiled.

“Because that is what I told him.”

I felt sick.

My entire family history was collapsing again.

Thomas had fabricated identities.

Births.

Deaths.

Marriages.

Inheritance.

Everything.

I looked at Noah.

He was staring at Gabriel.

Thomas spoke softly.

“The bloodline is complete.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Thomas looked at me.

“Your son is the bridge between the Reed and Caldwell systems.”

“He is not a bridge.”

“He is the heir.”

“He is a child.”

“He is both.”

I stepped toward Noah.

Thomas stopped me.

“You want your son?”

“Yes.”

“Then answer one question.”

“What?”

“Will you give him the inheritance?”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Will you sign the guardianship transfer?”

“No.”

Thomas smiled.

“Then Noah stays.”

I stared.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Thomas looked toward the screens.

“The world will learn that you are mentally unstable.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Your medical records.”

“What medical records?”

“Your therapy sessions.”

“I never had therapy.”

Thomas smiled.

“Exactly.”

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Thomas continued.

“Your husband recorded everything.”

My stomach turned.

“Everything?”

“Every argument.”

“Every emotional moment.”

“Every time you cried.”

“Every time you became angry.”

“Every time you said you couldn't cope.”

He smiled.

“We edited the recordings.”

My blood ran cold.

“To make me look unstable.”

“Yes.”

I understood.

The videos.

The chain.

The fabricated behavior.

The custody case.

The entire thing.

Thomas had built a narrative around me.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“But there is one thing we couldn't fake.”

I stared.

“What?”

He pointed toward Noah.

“The fact that he remembers.”

“Remembers what?”

Thomas looked at my son.

“Everything that happened the night he was born.”

Noah suddenly spoke.

“I remember.”

I turned.

“What do you remember?”

Noah looked at Thomas.

Then at me.

“Grandpa was there.”

My heart stopped.

“Which Grandpa?”

Noah pointed toward Daniel.

Then Thomas.

“Both.”

Thomas's smile disappeared.

Daniel went pale.

Noah continued.

“Daddy was there too.”

Ryan wasn't in the room.

I looked toward the door.

Then Noah said:

“And the man who held me…”

He pointed at Gabriel.

Gabriel froze.

“He said…”

Noah swallowed.

“He said, 'I'm sorry.'”

Gabriel's face drained of color.

I stared at him.

“You held Noah?”

“I don't remember.”

“You were there.”

“I don't remember.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Of course you don't.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“What did you do to me?”

Thomas smiled.

“We removed the memory.”

My blood ran cold.

“How?”

“Chemical conditioning.”

“You erased his memories?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew who Noah's father was.”

I stared.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at Gabriel.

“Ask him.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Thomas smiled.

“You will.”

The lights suddenly flickered.

A siren began.

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

“What did you do?”

Victor asked.

Thomas turned toward him.

“I didn't do anything.”

The security system displayed a message.

EXTERNAL BREACH.

Thomas's expression changed.

Someone had broken into the building.

Then another message appeared.

BLACK LEDGER RELEASE: 60 SECONDS.

I stared.

Gabriel looked at me.

“Someone activated the release.”

Thomas turned toward Daniel.

Daniel shook his head.

“Not me.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“Me.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You don't have the access.”

Victor raised the black drive.

“I do now.”

Thomas's face went white.

Victor looked at me.

“Emily, get Noah.”

I ran.

Thomas tried to stop me.

Gabriel tackled him.

Daniel grabbed Victor.

The room erupted into chaos.

I reached Noah.

He threw himself into my arms.

“Mommy!”

“I've got you.”

I lifted him.

We ran.

Behind us, alarms screamed.

The countdown appeared on every screen.

00:00:42

Thomas shouted:

“STOP THE RELEASE!”

Victor yelled:

“RUN!”

We reached the corridor.

A massive explosion shook the building.

The floor moved beneath us.

Noah screamed.

I held him tightly.

Then a door opened ahead.

A woman stood there.

Gray hair.

White hospital gown.

Bare feet.

She looked at me.

I froze.

I knew her face.

Even after twenty-five years.

My mother.

Rebecca.

She whispered:

“Emily.”

My knees nearly collapsed.

“Mom?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

She looked at Noah.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“You have to forgive me.”

I couldn't move.

She stepped toward us.

“I was the one who ordered Ryan to marry you.”

My heart shattered.

Then she said:

“But I wasn't trying to steal your son.”

She looked behind me.

“I'm trying to save him.”

The alarms continued.

The Black Ledger countdown reached:

00:00:18.

And my mother grabbed my hand.

“Because your father is not the real enemy.”

I stared.

“Then who is?”

She looked toward the darkness.

“The person who created all of us.”

00:00:10.

May you like

Rebecca whispered:

“Your grandmother.”
