CHAPTER 6 — THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The man stood at the end of the train.

He didn't look like a ghost.

He looked like a man who had spent his entire life waiting for this exact moment.

Tall.

Pale.

Impossibly calm.

His dark coat was perfectly buttoned despite the chaos around us.

But it was his eyes that terrified me.

Noah's eyes.

My son's eyes.

The same gray-blue color.

The same slight downward tilt at the corners.

The same cold intensity when he stared at someone.

I instinctively pulled Noah behind me.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Emily.”

I didn't answer.

He looked at Noah.

“Hello, little brother.”

Noah buried his face against my side.

I felt his fingers trembling.

“Don't come closer.”

The man stopped.

“Of course.”

His voice was gentle.

That somehow made him more frightening.

Ryan stared at him from the floor.

“Gabriel.”

The man's expression changed.

“Ryan.”

Ryan struggled to sit up.

“You're alive.”

Gabriel smiled.

“So are you.”

“I saw your body.”

“No.”

“You were dead.”

“I was declared dead.”

“Same thing.”

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

“No.”

He took another step.

“It isn't.”

Sam raised his gun.

Gabriel didn't even look at him.

“Put it down.”

Sam didn't.

Gabriel smiled.

“You won't shoot me.”

“Try me.”

“You've already lost one son tonight.”

Sam's face changed.

Gabriel glanced toward Ryan.

“Do you really want to lose another?”

Sam lowered the weapon.

I stared at Gabriel.

“Why did you pretend to be dead?”

He looked at me.

“Because Daniel wanted me dead.”

“You're his son.”

“Yes.”

“Your own father tried to kill you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel's smile disappeared.

“Because I was born with something he couldn't control.”

I looked at Noah.

“The mutation.”

Gabriel nodded.

“You know about it.”

“I know that my son supposedly has it.”

“He does.”

“What is it?”

Gabriel moved closer.

“It's not a mutation in the way they described it.”

“What is it?”

“A genetic encryption sequence.”

I frowned.

“That doesn't exist.”

“It does now.”

“How?”

“My grandfather developed it.”

“Why?”

“To protect the Reed family assets.”

I shook my head.

“Why would DNA be an encryption key?”

“Because passwords can be stolen.”

He pointed toward his own head.

“Biological signatures are harder to duplicate.”

I stared.

“So Noah can access the trust?”

“Not just the trust.”

“What else?”

“The Black Ledger.”

My stomach tightened.

“The ledger your father stole.”

Gabriel nodded.

“It's not a physical book.”

I stared.

“Then what is it?”

“A database.”

“Where?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Everywhere.”

I didn't understand.

“It exists across multiple encrypted servers.”

“Then why does everyone need Noah?”

“Because the final key isn't stored digitally.”

I looked down.

Noah was still hiding behind me.

Gabriel said quietly:

“It's encoded in his DNA.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because the system was designed so no single person could access the entire network.”

“Then why can Noah?”

“Because he inherited the necessary sequences from both sides.”

“The Reeds and Caldwells.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Victor.

He looked away.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Gabriel answered.

“Because they were afraid you would discover the truth.”

“Who is they?”

Gabriel's eyes darkened.

“Everyone.”

The train suddenly slowed.

Victor looked toward the front.

“Why are we stopping?”

Gabriel smiled.

“We're not.”

A loud metallic crash came from somewhere ahead.

The train jolted.

Noah screamed.

I held him tightly.

“What happened?”

Gabriel looked toward the darkness.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

Then the emergency lights came on.

Red.

Flashing.

The train had entered a massive underground station.

And dozens of people stood on the platform.

Armed.

Waiting.

My heart stopped.

Gabriel looked at me.

“Now you understand.”

“You brought us here.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they were coming.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed them to see you.”

I stared.

“You used us as bait.”

Gabriel's expression remained calm.

“Yes.”

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the train.

Everyone froze.

Gabriel slowly turned his face back toward me.

I was shaking.

“You put my son in danger.”

“I know.”

“You could have gotten him killed.”

“I knew they wouldn't shoot.”

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

“How?”

He looked at Noah.

“Because they need him alive.”

I hated that answer.

But it was true.

A loudspeaker crackled.

A man's voice echoed across the station.

“Gabriel.”

Gabriel looked toward the platform.

Daniel.

My father.

He stepped into view.

My heart stopped.

He wasn't alone.

Diane was beside him.

Her hands were cuffed.

Ryan's mother.

She looked terrified.

Behind them stood Victor.

I turned.

The Victor beside me froze.

I looked back toward the platform.

There were two Victors.

One beside Daniel.

One beside me.

My mind couldn't process it.

The man beside Daniel smiled.

The man beside me whispered:

“Now you see why I told you not to trust appearances.”

I stared at him.

“Who are you?”

He removed his coat.

Then his face changed.

A mask.

He pulled it away.

The man standing beside me wasn't Victor.

It was another man entirely.

My stomach dropped.

He looked almost identical.

Same height.

Similar face.

But not Victor.

He smiled.

“I'm Daniel's security chief.”

I stepped backward.

“Where is Victor?”

The man pointed toward the platform.

“He's there.”

Victor was standing beside Daniel.

Alive.

The real Victor looked at me.

His eyes were full of regret.

“Emily.”

I stared at him.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You sent a fake Victor with us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Because I couldn't get close enough to protect you otherwise.”

Daniel laughed.

“You still think you're protecting her.”

Victor turned toward him.

“I am.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You're protecting yourself.”

The train doors opened.

Men surrounded us.

Gabriel raised his hands.

“Don't shoot.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You came back.”

Gabriel smiled.

“I never left.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You were supposed to die.”

“So were you.”

Silence.

I looked between them.

“What's happening?”

Gabriel looked at me.

“Your father wants Noah.”

Daniel corrected him.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I want my grandson.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You don't know the meaning of that word.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“I know more about him than you do.”

“You weren't there when he was born.”

“I was.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Daniel nodded.

“I watched.”

“Where?”

“At the hospital.”

My stomach twisted.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make sure the child survived.”

“Then why did you let them take him?”

“I didn't.”

“Who did?”

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“Your husband.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

I turned toward him.

“Is that true?”

Ryan whispered:

“Yes.”

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You tried to take Noah.”

“Yes.”

“You were going to give him to them.”

“I was trying to stop them.”

“You keep saying that.”

Ryan's voice broke.

“I failed.”

Daniel smiled.

“He failed because he developed feelings.”

Ryan glared at him.

“You destroyed everything.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me orders.”

“I gave you purpose.”

“You gave me a family to destroy.”

Daniel's expression became cold.

“And you obeyed.”

Ryan had no answer.

Noah suddenly stepped forward.

He looked at Daniel.

“Are you Grandpa?”

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared at him.

Something almost human appeared in his eyes.

“Yes.”

Noah studied him.

“Mommy says you're bad.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Your mother doesn't know me.”

Noah shook his head.

“You hurt Mommy.”

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“No.”

“You made Daddy hurt Mommy.”

Silence.

Daniel looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked away.

Noah continued:

“Grandma hurt me.”

Daniel didn't respond.

“Daddy filmed me.”

Still nothing.

Noah's voice trembled.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

Noah frowned.

“From Mommy?”

Daniel nodded.

Noah shook his head.

“Mommy protects me.”

The words landed like a weapon.

Daniel stared at the child.

Then he looked at me.

For one second, I thought he might change.

He didn't.

“Take the boy.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

The armed men moved forward.

Gabriel stepped between us.

“Don't.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You will move.”

“No.”

“You're still disobedient.”

Gabriel smiled.

“And you're still afraid.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Afraid of what?”

Gabriel looked at Noah.

“Of the truth.”

Daniel raised his gun.

Gabriel didn't move.

Then Victor shouted:

“Daniel!”

Everyone turned.

Victor was holding something.

A small black drive.

“Stop.”

Daniel froze.

Victor held the drive up.

“You don't get Noah.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what you're holding.”

“I understand exactly.”

Victor looked at me.

“This contains the original trust agreement.”

My heart stopped.

“The real one?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Victor.”

“You forged the copy.”

Daniel stared.

“You stole the original.”

“Yes.”

“Where did you get it?”

Victor smiled.

“From your vault.”

Daniel's expression became murderous.

“You betrayed me.”

“I betrayed you years ago.”

He looked at me.

“I just never had the courage to admit it.”

I felt tears fill my eyes.

“Why?”

Victor swallowed.

“Because your mother saved my life.”

Daniel laughed.

“Rebecca manipulated you.”

“No.”

Victor's voice became stronger.

“She trusted me.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

Victor pointed the drive at the nearest wall.

“If you shoot me, the files automatically upload.”

Daniel froze.

Gabriel smiled.

“That's clever.”

Victor looked at him.

“I learned from your mother.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

“Don't mention her.”

Victor's expression changed.

“Your mother loved you.”

Gabriel looked away.

I stared.

“Your mother?”

Gabriel didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who was she?”

Gabriel finally looked at me.

“Rebecca.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

I stared.

“Then you're…”

“My half-brother.”

The world seemed to disappear.

“You're my brother?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Not your father's son.”

“Then whose?”

“Your mother's.”

I couldn't breathe.

“You're the baby in the photograph.”

“Yes.”

“The baby everyone said died.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Noah.

“Then why does Noah look like you?”

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“Because we share the same mother.”

My eyes filled with tears.

I had spent my entire life believing I was alone.

Now I had a brother.

A living brother.

A brother who had been hidden from me.

A brother who had been hunted.

And perhaps the only person who understood what Noah was carrying.

Daniel interrupted.

“Enough.”

He looked at Gabriel.

“You've had your reunion.”

He turned to his men.

“Take Emily.”

They moved.

Gabriel stepped forward.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You still think you can stop me?”

Gabriel smiled.

“I don't have to.”

He pressed a button on his watch.

Every light in the station turned on.

Screens appeared across the walls.

Documents.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

Daniel stared.

“What did you do?”

Gabriel looked at me.

“I opened the Black Ledger.”

The screens changed.

A countdown appeared.

00:09:59

I stared.

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

Gabriel's eyes met mine.

“Everything becomes public.”

Daniel's face went white.

Victor whispered:

“The entire network.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Every name.”

“Every account.”

“Every payment.”

“Every crime.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Stop it.”

Gabriel smiled.

“I can't.”

“Then kill him!”

A dozen guns turned toward Gabriel.

I screamed.

“No!”

Noah stepped forward.

“Don't hurt Uncle.”

Everyone froze.

Gabriel looked at him.

Something softened in his eyes.

Daniel stared at Noah.

Then at the countdown.

00:08:41

Daniel lowered his weapon.

“Fine.”

He looked at me.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then come with me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You'll never understand otherwise.”

“I don't care.”

“You will.”

He pointed toward the tunnel.

“Because the truth about Noah's father is waiting there.”

I froze.

Gabriel looked at me.

“Don't go.”

Daniel smiled.

“You've spent the entire night searching for answers.”

He turned.

“Now you can have them.”

Then he said the words that made my heart stop.

“Because Noah's father is not dead.”

I looked at Gabriel.

He was suddenly terrified.

“Emily…”

I whispered:

“Who is Noah's father?”

Gabriel looked toward Daniel.

Daniel smiled.

“Come find out.”

Then the station lights went black.

And when they came back on—

Daniel was gone.

So was Noah.

I screamed.

“NOAH!”

My son had disappeared.

And the countdown on the wall continued.

00:07:59

Gabriel grabbed my arm.

“Emily!”

I fought him.

“Where is my son?”

He looked toward the tunnel.

“They took him.”

“Who?”

Gabriel's face went pale.

“The same people who killed our mother.”

I stared.

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“The Reed family.”

I froze.

“You said the Reeds were my mother's family.”

“They were.”

“Then why would they take Noah?”

Gabriel's voice broke.

“Because the man who took Noah…”

He swallowed.

“…is your real grandfather.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

And somewhere deep beneath the station, my four-year-old son was being carried toward a man whose identity had been erased from every family record.

A man who had been waiting for Noah to be born.

A man who had spent twenty-five years preparing for this moment.

The countdown continued.

00:07:21.

And I finally understood.

The chain around Noah's neck had never been the real prison.

May you like

The real prison was the secret his blood carried.

And someone had just taken my son to unlock it.
