CHAPTER 5 — The Inheritance They Stole From Me

The first thing I noticed when I arrived at my parents’ mansion was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that comes before a storm.

The Bennett estate had always been a symbol of power.

A massive stone mansion overlooking the lake.

Perfect gardens.

Perfect architecture.

Perfect image.

Everything about it was designed to tell the world one message:

The Bennetts were untouchable.

But standing there now, I saw something different.

A beautiful house built on buried secrets.

I stepped through the front doors at exactly 6:00 p.m.

The same doors I had walked through thousands of times as a child.

The same hallway where family portraits hung proudly.

My grandfather.

My father.

Olivia.

And me.

Except there was one difference.

For the first time, I noticed something strange.

Every portrait showed the Bennett family legacy.

But none showed my grandmother.

The woman who knew the truth.

The woman who tried to protect me.

The woman they erased.

“Finally.”

My father’s voice came from the living room.

I walked inside.

Richard Bennett stood near the fireplace.

My mother sat on the sofa.

And Olivia was there too.

Of course she was.

She looked different from yesterday.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect smile had disappeared.

She looked uncomfortable.

Almost afraid.

That was new.

My father gestured toward the chair.

“Sit down.”

I remained standing.

“I’m fine.”

His jaw tightened.

Even now, he still expected obedience.

“You have been speaking with Ethan Cross.”

It wasn’t a question.

I smiled slightly.

“So you do know.”

My mother looked at my father.

“What is she talking about?”

I turned toward her.

“You really don’t know?”

Her expression changed.

That was when I realized something.

She wasn’t acting.

She truly didn’t know everything.

My father noticed my reaction.

“Maya, whatever Ethan told you—”

“Was the truth?”

He stopped.

I placed my grandmother’s letter on the table.

The room changed instantly.

My father stared at the envelope.

Like he was looking at a ghost.

“Where did you get that?”

I looked at him.

“You know exactly where.”

His face lost color.

Olivia stood.

“What is that?”

Nobody answered her.

Because everyone in that room knew.

The past had finally returned.

“My grandmother left me a letter.”

My voice remained steady.

“She told me everything.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“She was sick.”

“She was betrayed.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then explain why she wrote that you knew about the Cross family.”

Silence.

My mother looked confused.

“Richard?”

My father didn’t answer.

That was the first time I had ever seen my mother look at him with suspicion.

“What is she talking about?”

Still nothing.

I continued.

“She said Grandpa stole control of Bennett Holdings from William Cross.”

Olivia gasped.

“That’s impossible.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Grandpa built this company.”

I almost laughed.

“That’s what we were told.”

Olivia looked at my father.

“Dad?”

For once, she didn’t have an answer.

I opened the letter.

“There’s more.”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Maya, stop.”

“No.”

My voice cut through the room.

“You don’t get to tell me when I can know the truth anymore.”

His expression changed.

Because he realized something important.

The power dynamic had shifted.

I was no longer the daughter asking permission.

I was the person holding the answers.

“My grandmother created a trust.”

I looked at my father.

“A secret trust.”

His face went pale.

“A trust that transferred ownership rights of Bennett Holdings to me.”

The room went completely silent.

Then Olivia laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she couldn’t accept it.

“That’s ridiculous.”

I looked at her.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“You?”

The old Olivia returned.

The one who believed my entire existence was beneath hers.

“You’re saying Grandma left everything to you?”

“Yes.”

Her smile disappeared.

“But why?”

That question was painful.

Because it revealed everything.

Olivia didn’t ask:

“Why didn’t I know?”

She asked:

“Why you?”

I looked at her.

“Because she believed I would protect what she built.”

My father stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Actually, I do.”

I pulled out my phone.

“I spoke with my attorney.”

His expression changed.

“You what?”

“Yes.”

I turned the screen toward him.

“Tomorrow morning, I’m meeting with the trust administrator.”

My father went completely still.

Because he knew.

If the trust was real

Everything changed.

My mother slowly stood.

“Richard
”

Her voice was shaking.

“Is this true?”

My father looked at her.

For a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not control.

Fear.

“Maya doesn’t understand the situation.”

My mother stared.

“That’s not an answer.”

He looked away.

And that was the answer.

My mother covered her mouth.

“All these years
”

Her voice broke.

“You knew?”

My father said nothing.

“You knew your mother wanted Maya to inherit?”

Still nothing.

“And you let me believe Olivia was the future of this family?”

His silence destroyed something between them.

Because my mother finally saw what I had seen for years.

Richard Bennett didn’t just control his children.

He controlled the entire story.

Later that night, I sat alone in my apartment.

The city lights reflected against my window.

Five days ago, I thought my biggest challenge was proving myself professionally.

Now I had discovered my entire family history was built on lies.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ethan.

The trust is only the beginning.

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Your grandmother left more than ownership papers.

My heartbeat increased.

She left evidence.

I typed back.

Evidence of what?

His response came instantly.

Evidence that your father’s biggest secret is not what he did to my family.

I frowned.

Then another message appeared.

It’s what he did to yours.

I stared at those words.

A cold feeling spread through me.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father wasn’t afraid because I discovered the inheritance.

He was afraid because I was getting closer to something much bigger.

Something he had buried for decades.

Something even Olivia didn’t know.

The next morning, I walked into the trust administrator’s office.

A woman in her sixties greeted me.

“Ms. Bennett.”

I sat down.

“Yes?”

She opened a file.

“Maya Bennett.”

She looked at me carefully.

“Your grandmother instructed us to wait until you reached a certain level of independence before revealing this.”

“Why?”

The woman smiled sadly.

“Because Eleanor Bennett knew your father would try to control you.”

My throat tightened.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

The woman placed a document in front of me.

“This is the official Bennett Legacy Trust.”

I looked down.

My name was written at the top.

Then I saw the next line.

And everything changed.

Primary Beneficiary: Maya Eleanor Bennett.

But underneath it was another name.

A name I never expected.

Secondary Beneficiary: Olivia Grace Bennett.

I looked up.

“Olivia?”

The administrator nodded.

“Your grandmother loved both of you.”

I frowned.

“Then why hide this?”

The woman opened another envelope.

“Because your grandmother knew your father would use Olivia against you.”

Inside was another letter.

Only one sentence.

I read it.

And my entire body went cold.

Maya, if your father ever discovers this letter before you do, Olivia will never learn the truth about herself.

I looked up.

“What truth?”

The administrator hesitated.

Then whispered:

May you like

“Ms. Bennett
”

“Your sister is not who you think she is.”
