CHAPTER 14 — The Estate Where The Lies Began

The abandoned Bennett estate had not appeared on any map for years.

At least, not any map that ordinary people could access.

It was a place erased from history.

Just like William Cross.

Just like Alexander Vale.

Just like the truth about my family.

As our car moved through the narrow road surrounded by dead trees and fog, I stared out the window.

The further we traveled, the heavier the silence became.

Olivia sat beside me.

For once, she wasn’t scrolling through her phone.

She wasn’t thinking about appearances.

She wasn’t trying to be perfect.

She was just my sister.

A woman trying to understand the same painful history.

“You okay?”

I asked.

She looked out at the dark forest.

“No.”

A small, honest answer.

I nodded.

“Me neither.”

For years, we had both been fighting battles we didn’t understand.

Now we were finally seeing the battlefield.

The Bennett estate appeared after another thirty minutes.

A massive stone mansion hidden between the trees.

It was beautiful once.

I could see that.

The architecture.

The gardens.

The enormous windows overlooking the valley.

This wasn’t just a house.

It was where the Bennett empire was born.

Alexander stepped out of the car.

“This is where Arthur, William, and my father created the original agreement.”

I looked at the mansion.

“And this is where Richard destroyed it.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan, who had joined us, looked toward the building.

“Are you sure he’s here?”

Alexander checked his phone.

“His vehicle was tracked here last night.”

My stomach tightened.

Richard wanted us to find him.

That was the part that worried me.

Because my father never did anything without a plan.

The front door was unlocked.

That scared me more than if it had been locked.

A man like Richard Bennett didn’t leave doors open accidentally.

We entered slowly.

The inside looked untouched.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old paintings hung on the walls.

But everything was exactly where it had been decades ago.

Like someone had preserved a moment in time.

Then I saw it.

A photograph.

Three men standing together.

Arthur Bennett.

William Cross.

Alexander Vale.

The founders.

The real founders.

I touched the frame.

“How many people knew?”

Alexander answered quietly.

“Only those who were supposed to.”

“And Richard?”

“He learned everything.”

A pause.

“And that’s when he decided the company needed one owner.”

We searched the mansion room by room.

The old office.

The library.

The basement.

Nothing.

No documents.

No hidden files.

No records.

Until Ethan noticed something.

“Wait.”

He stood near the fireplace.

“What?”

He pointed.

“The symbol.”

Above the fireplace was the same symbol engraved on the necklace Alexander had given me.

I stepped closer.

A small circular marking.

Almost invisible.

I placed the necklace against it.

A click echoed through the room.

Everyone froze.

The wall moved.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands shook.

Because this was what my entire family had fought over.

The truth.

Inside the box were three things.

A journal.

A USB drive.

And an envelope.

The envelope had one name written on it.

Maya.

I stared.

“My grandfather?”

Alexander nodded.

“Open it.”

I did.

The handwriting was Arthur’s.

But this letter felt different.

More urgent.

Maya,

If you have found this, then Richard has finally been forced to reveal what he spent his life hiding.

I continued reading.

The company was never stolen by one decision. It was stolen by many moments where people chose silence over courage.

My eyes moved to the others.

Because that was the story of my family.

Silence.

Richard will tell you that he did everything for survival.

Do not believe him.

Survival explains fear.

It does not excuse betrayal.

Then came the part that changed everything.

There is something Richard does not know.

I held my breath.

William Cross did not disappear because he was defeated.

He disappeared because he discovered the final betrayal.

I looked at Ethan.

“What betrayal?”

Alexander took the journal.

The next line made my blood run cold.

Arthur Bennett was not the first person Richard betrayed.

I frowned.

What did that mean?

Before William. Before the company. Before the trust.

Richard betrayed his own family.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Someone was inside.

Ethan immediately moved in front of me.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Then a voice.

A familiar voice.

“Still protecting her?”

My blood froze.

Richard.

He stepped into the hallway.

But he looked different.

Not like the powerful CEO from the news.

Not like the man who controlled boardrooms.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

But his eyes were still dangerous.

“You found it.”

I held up the journal.

“Yes.”

He looked at it.

Then laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.”

I stepped forward.

“Then explain.”

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw sadness.

Then it disappeared.

“You think this journal proves I’m the villain.”

“Doesn’t it?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

He walked closer.

“It proves everyone is guilty.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at her.

A complicated expression crossed his face.

“I never wanted you involved.”

She stared at him.

“You never wanted me involved in anything except being your puppet.”

His face tightened.

That hurt him.

Because it was true.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Her voice was stronger than I had ever heard.

“I understand perfectly.”

Richard looked at me.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

He pointed toward the journal.

“Open the last page.”

I looked down.

The final page was sealed.

A red mark covered the corner.

“What is this?”

Richard smiled bitterly.

“The part your grandfather never wanted anyone to find.”

I broke the seal.

Inside was one sentence.

One sentence that made everyone stop breathing.

The person who destroyed Bennett Holdings was not Richard Bennett.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Richard.

“What?”

He whispered:

“Now you understand.”

The room became silent.

Because suddenly, everything we believed was changing again.

Richard wasn’t smiling.

He wasn’t celebrating.

He looked terrified.

I turned the page.

There was another name.

The person responsible.

The person who manipulated everything.

The person who had been hidden from history.

My eyes widened.

“No
”

Olivia looked at me.

“What?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because the name written there belonged to someone we trusted.

Someone who had guided us.

Someone who had helped us uncover the truth.

I slowly looked up.

At Alexander.

His face had gone pale.

Because he knew.

He knew what was written.

The true architect of the betrayal was Alexander Vale.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The man who had helped us expose my father

might have been the person who destroyed everything.

And then Richard said the words that shattered the room:

May you like

“Maya
”

“You’ve been fighting the wrong enemy.”
