Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE BALLROOM

The wedding planner’s name was Camille Ross.
At first, she refused to meet Naomi.
Then Naomi mentioned Maisie.
Camille changed her mind.
They met in a bakery three blocks from Union Square.
Camille arrived wearing sunglasses even though it was raining.
“I signed an NDA.”
Naomi said, “An NDA doesn’t require you to hide child mistreatment.”
Camille’s jaw tightened.
“I’m not hiding anything.”
“Then tell me what happened.”
Camille stared at her coffee.
“Vanessa was obsessed with the ceremony photographs.”
“I know.”
“She didn’t want anything unexpected in the aisle.”
Naomi’s fingers tightened around her cup.
“Maisie was unexpected?”
“Vanessa said Graham’s daughter would confuse the visual narrative.”
Naomi almost laughed.
“The visual narrative.”
“That was her phrase.”
Camille looked ashamed.
“She asked that Maisie remain in the family lounge until after the vows.”
“Alone?”
“A junior attendant was supposed to stay with her.”
“Did she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was the door locked?”
Camille looked away.
“Camille.”
“I didn’t lock it.”
“Who did?”
“I saw Vanessa walk down that corridor before the ceremony.”
Naomi stopped moving.
“Was she carrying anything?”
Camille thought.
“A phone.”
“What color?”
The planner looked confused.
“Blue.”
Naomi’s pulse jumped.
“What did she do?”
“I don’t know.”
“Please.”
Camille lowered her voice.
“I heard Maisie crying later.”
Naomi’s throat tightened.
“And?”
“I went toward the lounge.”
“What happened?”
“Vanessa stopped me.”
“What did she say?”
Camille hesitated.
Then repeated it exactly.
“She stays there until the ceremony is over.”
Naomi felt sick.
“Did anyone else hear?”
“One of the videographer’s assistants.”
“Name?”
“Aiden.”
“Last name?”
Camille shook her head.
“I don’t remember.”
Naomi pulled out her phone.
“Can you testify?”
Camille immediately stood.
“No.”
“You just told me—”
“I told you because I’m ashamed.”
“My daughter needs the truth.”
“I have a business.”
“So does Vanessa.”
“You don’t understand these people.”
Naomi stared at her.
“No. I understand them perfectly.”
Camille grabbed her coat.
Before leaving, she leaned close.
“Ask the videographer for the raw footage.”
Naomi froze.
“What footage?”
“The wedding film had eight cameras.”
Camille glanced toward the door.
“Only six were in the ballroom.”
Then she walked away.
The videographer, Eli Benton, answered on the fourth call.
“Yes, I still have the raw files.”
Naomi gripped the phone.
“From the service corridor?”
Pause.
“Why?”
“My daughter was locked in a room back there.”
Long silence.
Then:
“You should come here.”
Eli’s studio occupied the second floor of an old warehouse in Brooklyn.
He pulled up hundreds of files.
Camera seven had been positioned near the catering entrance.
At 4:06 p.m., Vanessa appeared.
Wedding dress.
Perfect hair.
Blue phone in one hand.
She moved toward the service hallway.
At 4:07, a young assistant approached.
No audio.
Vanessa pointed toward a door.
The assistant looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa said something.
Then disappeared inside.
At 4:08, she came back out.
Naomi leaned toward the screen.
“Can you zoom?”
Eli enlarged the image.
Vanessa closed the door.
Then her hand moved toward the handle.
But a catering cart blocked the lower half of the frame.
Naomi couldn’t see whether she locked it.
At 4:09, Vanessa walked away.
At 4:12, the assistant returned.
He tried the handle.
Once.
Twice.
It didn’t open.
Naomi stopped breathing.
The assistant looked around.
Then bent near the lock.
Eli paused the video.
“There.”
Naomi stared.
“What?”
He zoomed tighter.
The assistant held something.
A thin metal object.
He inserted it near the door.
Naomi whispered,
“He’s opening it.”
“Looks like it.”
Seconds later, the door opened.
Maisie emerged.
Her face was red.
She was crying.
The assistant knelt.
Then someone appeared at the far end of the corridor.
Vanessa.
She walked fast.
The assistant stood.
Vanessa pointed back toward the room.
Maisie shook her head.
Vanessa took her arm.
Not violently.
But firmly.
She led Maisie back inside.
Closed the door.
Naomi’s eyes filled.
Eli said nothing.
Then something stranger happened.
Vanessa raised the blue phone.
She held it near the door.
Pressed something.
And from the tiny studio speakers came a faint voice.
Naomi’s voice.
Eli increased the audio.
The words were distorted by distance.
But unmistakable.
“Be good, Maisie. Mommy will come later.”
Naomi went completely still.
“I never recorded that.”
Eli turned toward her.
“What?”
“I never said that.”
The video continued.
Vanessa listened.
Then smiled.
The blue phone had existed before the wedding confrontation.
Before the custody fight.
Before Naomi slapped her.
Which meant Vanessa’s manipulation had not begun after the ballroom.
It had begun before it.
Naomi stared at the frozen image.
Vanessa had lied about the origin of her revenge.
And suddenly Naomi understood something worse.
May you like
The wedding humiliation had not created Vanessa’s plan.
It had interrupted one already in progress.
