Chapter 12 - UNIT 214

Graham did not break into the unit.
He did something smarter.
He checked the rental ledger.
Unit C-214 had been leased nine months earlier.
The renter was not Vanessa.
It was VBL Consulting.
The same company that paid Cassie.
Graham called Naomi.
His voice was shaking.
“You were right.”
Naomi sat down.
“About what?”
“Two-one-four.”
Silence.
“It’s real.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
“Who rented it?”
“VBL.”
Her hand tightened around the phone.
“Can you access it?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“What?”
“Don’t.”
“I can request corporate records.”
“Do that.”
Graham hesitated.
“Naomi.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry.”
She looked toward the window.
“For what?”
“For not believing you.”
“You still don’t know everything.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Her voice hardened.
“You know enough to start helping your daughter. That’s different.”
He was quiet.
“You’re right.”
Naomi almost didn’t recognize him.
The digital forensic report arrived that afternoon.
Marcus Lee found strong indicators that the voicemail had been synthetically assembled.
More importantly, a login analysis from FamilyBridge identified one suspicious session.
Naomi’s account had been accessed from an IP address registered to Mercer residential internet.
Graham’s house.
At 1:13 p.m.
The same minute the false schedule change had been sent.
Naomi had been at work in Manhattan.
She had building-access records proving it.
Graham had been at Mercer headquarters.
Vanessa had been home.
Still circumstantial.
But the wall was growing.
Brick by brick.
Then came the email account.
Naomi’s password had been reset through an old backup question.
The recovery request came from the same residential IP.
Lydia read the report and finally smiled.
“Now we have something.”
“Enough?”
“Enough to request discovery.”
“Of Vanessa’s devices?”
“Potentially.”
Naomi exhaled.
For weeks she had felt trapped inside a maze Vanessa controlled.
Now she could finally see an exit.
Then Graham called again.
“Vanessa knows about the storage records.”
“How?”
“She checked my work laptop.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
“Where is she?”
“Home.”
“Where’s Maisie?”
“With my mother.”
“Keep her there.”
“I am.”
“Don’t confront Vanessa.”
“I already did.”
Naomi stood.
“What did you say?”
“I asked her what VBL is.”
“And?”
“She said it’s an old consulting company.”
“Did she explain Cassie?”
“She said she hired Cassie for event work.”
“Eight thousand dollars?”
“She says Cassie helped with wedding logistics.”
Naomi laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Graham continued.
“I asked about the storage unit.”
“And?”
“She said wedding decorations.”
“Do you believe her?”
“No.”
The word came immediately.
It was the first time Graham had answered without hesitation.
Naomi sat back down.
“What happened next?”
“She offered me a deal.”
Naomi went still.
“What kind of deal?”
“She said if I withdraw the custody petition and stop helping you, she’ll drop the protective-order complaint.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I said the same thing.”
“What did she say?”
Graham’s voice became quieter.
“She said this stopped being about custody a long time ago.”
Naomi felt cold.
“Then what is it about?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Graham said,
“She did say one thing.”
“What?”
“That if I open Unit 214, I’m going to destroy my family.”
Naomi stared at the wall.
“Your family?”
“Her exact words.”
That changed the shape of everything.
Naomi had assumed the storage unit contained evidence against her.
Maybe it did.
But Vanessa’s threat suggested something else.
Something involving the Mercers.
Something she had found before the wedding.
Something powerful enough to make Graham afraid.
Naomi whispered,
“What did you give her access to before you married her?”
“Everything.”
“Financial records?”
“Some.”
“Family files?”
“Some.”
“Your father’s company?”
Graham didn’t answer.
Naomi felt a new door opening beneath the old mystery.
Vanessa’s revenge might have started with humiliation.
But revenge was not the only thing keeping her inside the Mercer family.
May you like
She needed something.
And whatever it was might be sitting behind the metal door marked C-214.
