CHAPTER 4 — The Trial

Nearly eleven months later...
The courtroom was packed.
Journalists lined every bench.
Women's advocacy groups filled the gallery.
Carmen entered wearing pearls and designer clothes.
She smiled confidently.
As though this were merely another business meeting.
Then Sofia took the stand.
Every person in the courtroom became silent.
She didn't cry.
She didn't raise her voice.
She simply told the truth.
She described every slap.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Then the prosecutor played the hotel recording.
Unknown to everyone...
A hotel hallway microphone had captured voices through the slightly opened suite door.
The recording wasn't perfect.
But one sentence came through with chilling clarity.
Javier's voice.
"Just don't bruise her face too much."
The courtroom froze.
Carmen slowly turned toward her son.
He couldn't meet her eyes.
The defense collapsed.
Over the next three weeks...
Former employees testified.
Former daughters-in-law testified.
Even one of the older women who participated accepted a plea deal and admitted everything.
"This wasn't the first time."
The courtroom erupted.
For years...
Young brides marrying into Carmen's family had been pressured, threatened, and financially manipulated.
Sofia had simply been the first woman brave enough to escape.
The jury deliberated less than four hours.
Guilty.
Every count.
Assault.
Conspiracy.
False imprisonment.
Witness intimidation.
Attempted fraud.
When the judge announced the sentence...
Carmen's confident smile finally disappeared.
She would spend decades behind bars.
Javier received a lengthy prison sentence as well.

As deputies led them away...
Neither looked back.
