CHAPTER 2 — The First Mistake Carmen Made

Alexander didn't say another word for nearly five minutes.

He simply sat beside Sofia, holding her trembling hand while the room remained painfully quiet.

Then he looked at me.

"Take pictures."

"What?"

"Every bruise."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Before they fade."

I grabbed my phone.

Every photograph made my stomach turn.

The swollen cheek.

The fingerprints around her wrists.

The bruises blooming across her upper arms.

The torn wedding dress.

The split lip.

Evidence.

Alexander watched without blinking.

When I finished, he stood.

"I'm taking her to the emergency room."

Sofia immediately shook her head.

"No."

"They'll find me."

"They'll come after me."

Alexander knelt in front of her again.

"They already have."

He gently lifted her chin.

"The only difference now is that you're not facing them alone."

...

The emergency physician spent almost an hour examining Sofia.

The report listed everything.

A mild concussion.

Two cracked ribs.

Severe facial bruising.

Soft tissue injuries to both arms.

Defensive wounds on her hands.

The doctor quietly asked if she wanted the police.

Sofia hesitated.

Then she looked at me.

Then at Alexander.

Finally...

She nodded.

"Yes."

The responding detective arrived before sunrise.

She listened carefully without interrupting.

When Sofia described the hotel room...

The detective frowned.

"You said several women participated?"

"Yes."

"And your husband knew?"

Sofia swallowed.

"I heard his voice outside."

The detective closed her notebook.

"This is no longer simply domestic violence."

She looked directly at Alexander.

"This may involve conspiracy, intimidation, unlawful confinement, and assault by multiple offenders."

Alexander thanked her.

But I recognized that expression on his face.

He wasn't satisfied.

Not yet.

...

By noon, the hotel security department contacted police.

Someone had already requested surveillance footage.

Alexander hadn't waited.

His attorney had served preservation notices before sunrise.

If the hotel deleted a single second of video...

They would face consequences too.

Hours later...

The footage arrived.

Everyone gathered in a conference room.

The video showed Sofia entering the honeymoon suite smiling.

Still laughing.

Still holding Javier's hand.

Ten minutes later...

Javier exited alone.

He checked both sides of the hallway.

Almost like he was waiting.

Three minutes later...

Carmen stepped out of the elevator.

Behind her came four older women.

They entered the suite.

No one left for nearly forty-five minutes.

When the door finally opened...

Sofia stumbled into the hallway.

Barefoot.

Holding her ribs.

Her mascara running down her swollen face.

She looked around desperately before disappearing toward the emergency staircase.

Javier appeared only after she was gone.

He calmly straightened his jacket.

Then walked away with his mother.

No panic.

No concern.

No attempt to find his wife.

The detective paused the footage.

"I've seen abusive husbands."

She sighed.

"But this..."

She shook her head.

"This was planned."

...

That afternoon, police arrested Javier at his office.

He looked genuinely shocked.

"I didn't hit her!"

May you like

"No," the detective answered.

"You simply helped make sure someone else could."
