Chapter 3: The Courtroom

Chapter 3: The Courtroom
Three months later.
The courthouse overflowed with reporters.
The story had spread across every major news outlet.
"A bride assaulted on her wedding night."
"A mother-in-law accused of orchestrating an attack."
"A husband who allegedly stood outside while it happened."
Inside the courtroom, Carmen entered wearing an expensive white suit.
She smiled for every camera.
She believed appearances still mattered.
Javier walked behind her.
He refused to look toward Sofia.
The trial lasted eleven days.
The defense argued that Sofia had exaggerated everything after a family disagreement.
Then Alexander's attorney pressed a button.
The courtroom lights dimmed.
Hotel surveillance appeared on the screen.
There was Carmen.
Walking confidently toward the honeymoon suite.
Behind her came four women.
Javier held the door open.
The jury watched without blinking.
Next came the key-card records.
Only family members entered.
No strangers.
No mystery attackers.
Then came the medical reports.
Every injury matched Sofia's timeline.
Finally...
The prosecution played an audio recording recovered from one of the women's phones.
Carmen's voice filled the courtroom.
"She'll sign eventually."
"If pain doesn't work today..."
"...we'll make sure it works tomorrow."
Silence.
Even Carmen's attorney lowered his head.
The verdict arrived two days later.
Guilty.
On every major charge.
Assault.
Conspiracy.
Criminal intimidation.
Witness tampering.
Several accomplices received prison sentences alongside Carmen.
Javier avoided prison because he accepted a plea agreement and testified.
But the judge looked directly at him before sentencing.
"You may not have thrown a single punch."
"But your silence made every blow possible."
May you like
His marriage ended that afternoon.
So did his reputation.
