Chapter 3 – The Night They Came to Finish It

The gunshot echoed through the darkened hospital.
Then came another.
Screams erupted from every floor.
Patients cried out in confusion as emergency lights flickered weakly, bathing the corridors in a dim, blood-red glow.
Arthur was already running.
Years had passed since his last combat deployment, but muscle memory ignored age.
Every movement became automatic.
Every corner.
Every doorway.
Every reflection in polished glass.
His mind mapped the hospital the way it once mapped hostile compounds overseas.
Another scream.
Room 417.
Lily.
He rounded the final corner.
Two men dressed in hospital security uniforms were forcing Lily's room open.
Neither wore hospital-issued boots.
Neither carried standard equipment.
One held a suppressed pistol.
The other carried a medical bag.
Not security.
Professionals.
Arthur didn't slow down.
He accelerated.
The first attacker looked up too late.
Arthur slammed his shoulder into the man's chest, driving him through the glass observation window beside the room.
Glass exploded across the hallway.
The pistol skidded beneath a nurse's station.
The second man reached inside his jacket.
Arthur trapped his wrist before the weapon cleared leather.
One sharp twist.
Bone cracked.
The gun fell.
A second strike drove the attacker unconscious against the wall.
The entire fight lasted less than six seconds.
Jack Morrison appeared from the opposite hallway with Samuel directly behind him.
"You good?"
Arthur nodded once.
"Lily."
Jack kicked open the hospital room door.
The bed was empty.
Arthur's heart stopped.
"Lily!"
Then he heard her voice.
"Dad..."
She was crouched beside the bed, trembling.
A young nurse shielded her with her own body.
Arthur immediately knelt beside them.
"It's okay."
"It's me."
The nurse slowly stood.
"I locked the bed brakes."
"They couldn't move her."
Arthur looked into the young woman's frightened eyes.
"You saved my daughter."
She nodded.
"I only did what anyone should."
Arthur knew better.
Most people froze under pressure.
She hadn't.
He looked at her name badge.
Emma Collins.
"I won't forget your name."
Meanwhile...
Grace and Marcus raced toward the hospital's security office.
The power outage wasn't random.
Someone had disabled the building's backup generators.
Inside the control room they found a technician lying unconscious on the floor.
Alive.
Drugged.
Not injured.
Marcus immediately examined the electrical systems.
"Cables weren't cut."
Grace looked around.
"What does that mean?"
"They hacked the control network."
Grace frowned.
"From inside?"
Marcus nodded.
"They knew exactly where to strike."
Twenty minutes later...
The FBI arrived.
Not local police.
Federal agents.
Grace had made exactly one phone call before the attack.
Someone inside Washington had moved astonishingly fast.
Special Agent Daniel Brooks entered Arthur's temporary command room.
He looked around at the unconscious attackers.
"You capture these two?"
Arthur simply nodded.
Brooks examined them carefully.
Military haircuts.
Expensive tactical boots.
No identification.
Professional-grade suppressors.
"This wasn't a random hit."
Arthur answered quietly.
"No."
"They came to finish what Richard started."
Brooks searched the attackers' pockets.
No wallets.
No phones.
No fingerprints.
Both men had deliberately burned away their fingertips years earlier.
Contract killers.
Experienced ones.
Then Brooks discovered something unexpected.
A small silver coin.
An eagle engraved on one side.
A black wolf on the other.
His expression immediately changed.
Arthur noticed.
"You've seen it before."
Brooks slowly nodded.
"I hoped I never would again."
"What is it?"
"The Black Wolf Syndicate."
Jack looked up sharply.
"I thought they disappeared."
"So did everyone."
Grace looked toward Brooks.
"Who are they?"
The FBI agent placed the coin carefully into an evidence bag.
"They aren't a gang."
"They aren't a cartel."
"They're an international organization."
"They sell people."
"They erase witnesses."
"They move dirty money."
"They solve expensive problems."
Arthur understood immediately.
Richard hadn't hired ordinary criminals.
He'd hired specialists.
Which meant...
His empire was much darker than anyone imagined.
Across the city...
Richard paced furiously inside his home office.
His phone rang.
Private number.
He answered without greeting.
"What happened?"
A cold voice replied.
"They're alive."
Richard slammed his fist against the desk.
"You promised me this would end tonight."
"We lost two operators."
"I don't care."
"You should."
The voice became noticeably colder.
"They were among our best."
Richard fell silent.
The caller continued.
"You failed to mention Arthur Whitmore's background."
Richard frowned.
"He's retired."
"No."
"He survived."
"There's a difference."
The line disconnected.
For the first time...
Richard looked afraid.
Back at the hospital...
Lily finally told Arthur everything.
Not just about the beatings.
About the business.
"It wasn't only me."
Arthur listened carefully.
Richard often brought businessmen into the house.
Late-night meetings.
Locked offices.
Cash delivered in black duffel bags.
Foreign visitors who never used their real names.
"I wasn't supposed to hear."
She whispered.
"But one night..."
"I did."
Arthur leaned forward.
"What did you hear?"
"They weren't selling buildings."
"What were they selling?"
She closed her eyes.
"Girls."
The room became silent.
"They called them investments."
Arthur felt every muscle tighten.
"How old?"
Lily's voice broke.
"Some were younger than I was."
Grace slowly lowered her notebook.
Human trafficking.
Suddenly...
Every missing piece fit.
The money.
The politicians.
The judges.
The violence.
Richard's real estate company had never been the business.
It had been the cover.
The following morning...
Federal agents executed search warrants across three Hawthorne properties.
The results stunned everyone.
Inside a warehouse registered to Hawthorne Development...
Agents discovered forged passports.
Shipping manifests.
Encrypted ledgers.
And a locked underground room.
Inside...
Twelve frightened young women sat huddled together.
Some had been missing for months.
Others...
For years.
One girl immediately asked the first FBI agent she saw,
"Are we finally allowed to go home?"
Several seasoned investigators openly cried.
News spread across the country within hours.
Every major television network interrupted regular programming.
REAL ESTATE TYCOON LINKED TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATION
FEDERAL AUTHORITIES RAID MULTIPLE HAWTHORNE PROPERTIES
STATE OFFICIALS UNDER CORRUPTION PROBE
Richard's smiling face appeared on every screen.
His empire began collapsing before sunset.
Banks froze accounts.
Investors withdrew funding.
Board members resigned.
Political allies stopped answering his calls.
The first domino had become an avalanche.
That evening...
Arthur finally stepped outside Lily's hospital room.
Jack joined him with two cups of coffee.
"You okay?"
Arthur accepted the cup.
"I keep wondering how I missed it."
"You loved your daughter."
"I should've protected her."
Jack looked directly at his oldest friend.
"You taught all of us something years ago."
Arthur frowned.
"What?"
"Good men blame themselves."
"Bad men blame everyone else."
Arthur looked through the hospital window.
Lily was finally sleeping peacefully.
For the first time in months.
Maybe years.
Then Grace hurried down the hallway.
Her face had gone completely pale.
"We've got another problem."
Arthur immediately stood.
"What is it?"
She handed him a newly recovered financial document from one of the federal raids.
At the top was Richard's signature.
Beneath it...
A second signature.
Arthur read the name twice before believing it.
His blood ran cold.
"No..."
Jack looked over his shoulder.
"What?"
Arthur barely managed to speak.
"My brother..."
Grace nodded slowly.
"Michael Whitmore."
"He wasn't just involved."
"He was Richard Hawthorne's silent business partner."
Arthur stared at the page as memories flooded back.
Michael.
His younger brother.
The man he'd trusted with everything after retiring from the military.
The man who had attended Lily's wedding.
The man who had toasted the happy couple.
The man who had hugged her...
Knowing exactly what kind of monster she had married.
Outside the hospital, rain began falling once again.
Arthur realized the enemy had never been just Richard.
The betrayal...
May you like
Had been inside his own family all along.
To Be Continued...
