Chapter 2 – The First Domino

No one spoke for nearly a full minute.

The paused video glowed on Grace Chen's laptop.

Richard stood in the center of the frame, one hand gripping Lily's throat.

Margaret Hawthorne watched without the slightest trace of concern.

Behind them stood the town's Chief of Police.

Beside him...

The County Prosecutor.

And at the edge of the frame, smiling as if attending a cocktail party rather than witnessing a violent assault—

The State Attorney General.

Jack Morrison broke the silence first.

"They weren't hiding."

Grace slowly shook her head.

"They didn't think they had to."

Arthur stared at the frozen image.

"This wasn't confidence."

"It was immunity."

Grace closed the laptop carefully.

"Not anymore."

At 2:08 a.m., the conference room on the hospital's executive floor became a temporary command center.

No logos.

No uniforms.

No unnecessary conversation.

Just maps, laptops, evidence boards, and people who understood how to dismantle powerful organizations.

Jack pinned a photograph of Richard Hawthorne to the center of a whiteboard.

"Let's start with what we know."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Richard Hawthorne."

"Forty-two."

"Founder and CEO of Hawthorne Development Group."

"Estimated net worth: six hundred million dollars."

"Major political donor."

"Owns commercial real estate across three states."

Grace added another file.

"His mother, Margaret Hawthorne."

"Chairwoman of the Hawthorne Family Foundation."

"Serves on the boards of three hospitals."

"Trustee at the state university."

"Significant influence over local charities."

Arthur listened quietly.

None of that surprised him.

Men like Richard rarely built empires alone.

They built networks.

Networks that protected each other.

Samuel Ortiz entered carrying a cardboard box.

"I've got something."

He emptied its contents across the table.

Newspapers.

Corporate filings.

Campaign donation records.

Photographs.

For fifteen years after leaving the military, Arthur had lived an ordinary life.

His former teammates had not.

Grace became one of the country's most respected federal prosecutors.

Marcus specialized in organized crime investigations.

Jack worked private security for international corporations.

Samuel consulted for financial crime task forces.

If Code Black had one purpose...

It was this.

When ordinary justice failed...

The right people quietly found another way.

At dawn...

Dr. Emily Carter approached Arthur outside Lily's room.

"She's awake."

Arthur immediately entered.

Morning sunlight spilled across the hospital bed.

Lily looked fragile beneath the blankets, but her eyes were clearer than the night before.

She smiled weakly.

"You didn't sleep."

Arthur pulled a chair beside her.

"Neither did you."

She looked down at her bandaged wrist.

"I'm sorry."

Arthur frowned.

"For what?"

"For making you come back."

His heart broke all over again.

Victims apologized.

Abusers expected it.

"Listen to me."

He gently took her hand.

"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for."

Tears filled Lily's eyes.

"You don't know everything."

"Then tell me."

She hesitated.

For several long moments, she simply stared out the window.

Finally...

"It wasn't the first time."

Arthur already knew.

But hearing her say it hurt even more.

"It started six months after the wedding."

"What happened?"

"He shoved me."

She swallowed.

"Then he cried."

"He bought flowers."

"He promised it would never happen again."

Arthur nodded silently.

The pattern.

Exactly as expected.

"It kept getting worse."

"The bruises became excuses."

"The excuses became lies."

"I stopped calling because..."

She couldn't finish.

Arthur softly completed the sentence.

"...because he convinced you no one would believe you."

She nodded.

"And because he always reminded me who his friends were."

"The police."

"The judges."

"The politicians."

Arthur squeezed her hand.

"Not all of them."

Across town...

Richard woke to find three missed calls from the Chief of Police.

He called back immediately.

"What happened?"

The Chief sounded nervous.

"Arthur took Lily to St. Andrew's."

Richard shrugged.

"So?"

"So that's outside our jurisdiction."

Richard sat upright.

"What?"

"They're documenting everything."

Richard's confidence faltered.

"They won't get far."

"I wouldn't be so sure."

"What do you mean?"

"The hospital notified the state's domestic violence reporting system."

Richard frowned.

"Can you make it disappear?"

The Chief hesitated.

"No."

"For the first time in years..."

"...I can't."

Richard slammed the phone onto the bed.

Meanwhile...

Grace had already contacted trusted officials inside the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Only two people received the evidence.

Both had worked corruption cases for years.

Neither had ties to Richard's political circle.

One of them called within twenty minutes.

"Grace."

"Is the video authentic?"

"We're running forensic verification now."

"If it's real..."

"It is."

A pause.

Then—

"We're opening a federal investigation."

Grace looked toward Arthur.

"The first domino just fell."

Late that afternoon...

Marcus returned from the county courthouse.

His expression was grim.

"They're already moving."

"What happened?" Jack asked.

"Richard filed an emergency petition."

Arthur frowned.

"For what?"

Marcus slid a document across the table.

Emergency Protective Order

Richard claimed Arthur had violently abducted Lily from the Easter gathering.

Witness statements had already been submitted.

Seven guests claimed Arthur assaulted Richard.

Four claimed Lily had never been injured.

One even swore Arthur fabricated the entire incident.

Arthur laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

"They're manufacturing evidence."

Grace nodded.

"They're manufacturing witnesses."

Jack looked at Marcus.

"Can we destroy it?"

Marcus smiled faintly.

"We don't have to."

He held up Lily's recovered phone.

"We already have better evidence."

That evening...

Forensic technician Olivia Barnes entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.

"I've got good news."

She connected the damaged phone to a projector.

"The recording didn't stop when Lily dropped it."

Arthur looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"It continued recording from underneath the sofa."

The room darkened as the footage played.

The angle was poor.

Mostly shoes.

Table legs.

Fragments of movement.

But the audio...

The audio was crystal clear.

Richard laughed.

"Nobody's leaving until she learns respect."

A loud impact followed.

Lily cried out.

Margaret's voice answered immediately.

"Don't hit her face anymore."

"People ask questions when they see bruises."

Arthur closed his eyes.

Jack's jaw tightened.

Then another voice entered the conversation.

One Arthur hadn't expected.

The Chief of Police.

"Richard..."

"Next time call me before things get this messy."

Richard laughed.

"Relax."

"My father-in-law is just an old soldier."

"He can't touch us."

Several people laughed.

Then came the sentence that froze everyone.

"Even if he talks..."

"The judge already owes your family three favors."

Grace immediately stopped the recording.

"No."

Marcus stared at the speakers.

"Did he just say judge?"

Grace replayed the audio.

Again.

There it was.

Perfectly clear.

The judge.

Not just police.

Not just prosecutors.

Judges.

Arthur slowly stood.

"This is bigger than corruption."

Samuel nodded.

"It's organized."

Jack quietly added another photograph to the evidence board.

A picture of Richard.

Then another.

The Chief.

The prosecutor.

The Attorney General.

The judge.

Red strings connected every face.

Grace looked at the growing board.

"This isn't a family."

"It's an enterprise."

Just before midnight...

Arthur finally stepped outside for fresh air.

The hospital parking lot was almost empty.

Rain began falling softly.

His secure phone vibrated.

Unknown encrypted number.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a distorted voice whispered,

"You should've left your daughter where she belonged."

Arthur's expression never changed.

"Who is this?"

"You've made a very expensive mistake."

"I don't scare easily."

The caller laughed.

"We know where she is."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"We know where you are."

The line went dead.

At that exact moment...

Every light inside the hospital suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the entire building.

Emergency alarms erupted through every floor.

Nurses screamed.

Backup generators failed to start.

Then, somewhere down the hallway...

Arthur heard a sound that sent ice through his veins.

A gunshot.

Followed by a woman's terrified scream.

"Lily!"

May you like

Arthur sprinted toward her room as armed shadows emerged from the darkness.

Code Black had become a war.
