CHAPTER 4 — THE LAST NAME WE LEFT BEHIND

Three months later...

Sophie's scar had almost healed.

The doctors said she would recover completely.

The nightmares became less frequent.

Sometimes she still asked me one question.

"Why didn't Grandma help me?"

I never found an easy answer.

Because some wounds cannot be explained to a child.

Only survived.

My parents called dozens of times.

They wanted forgiveness.

Not because they had changed...

But because everyone now knew what they had done.

I never answered.

Some doors should remain closed forever.

The court sentenced Preston for assaulting a minor, filing a false report, and evidence tampering.

As he was led away...

He searched the courtroom for someone to stand beside him.

No one did.

Not our parents.

Not his former friends.

Not even the bride whose wedding had ended before the first dance.

Only silence remained.

One sunny afternoon...

Sophie squeezed my hand as we walked through the park.

She looked up at me and smiled.

"We don't need them anymore, do we, Mommy?"

I smiled back.

"No, sweetheart."

"We never needed people who only loved us when it was convenient."

"We only need people who choose us."

She wrapped her small arms around my waist.

For the first time in years...

Our last name no longer felt like a burden.

It became nothing more than words on old documents.

Family isn't built by blood.

It's built by courage.

By protection.

By truth.

And sometimes...

May you like

Justice begins with a tiny red light blinking silently above a doorway.

THE END
