Chapter 2 – The Lies Begin to Collapse

His bride removed her wedding ring before anyone spoke.

The tiny diamond struck the marble floor with a sharp metallic click.

"You framed a child."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"But everyone heard it."

Preston reached for her.

"Emily, listen—"

She stepped backward.

"Don't touch me."

Then she walked out of the ballroom.

Half the guests followed.

The celebration was over.

Police placed Preston in handcuffs.

My mother rushed forward.

"There must be some misunderstanding!"

"There is," the officer replied calmly.

"The misunderstanding is that you believed no one would ever question your son."

My father remained silent.

For the first time in my life...

He looked old.

The officer continued reviewing footage.

Another camera.

Another hallway.

Another surprise.

Minutes before planting the phone...

Preston had been speaking privately with my parents.

The audio wasn't clear.

But one sentence could be read from my mother's lips.

"She'll never recover from this."

The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.

This case had just become much larger.

At the hospital, Sophie needed stitches.

Eight of them.

The doctor assured me she would recover physically.

Emotionally...

That would take longer.

She looked at me from the hospital bed.

"Will Uncle Preston say sorry?"

I couldn't answer.

Some people never apologize.

Because apologizing would mean admitting they were never the victim.

The following morning, every local news station carried the same headline.

Groom Arrested After Wedding Assault Captured on CCTV.

By afternoon...

The video had spread across the country.

And someone unexpected contacted me.

A woman I had never met.

"My name is Laura."

"I think your brother did the same thing to me twelve years ago."
