Chapter 1 – The Footage They Never Wanted Anyone to See

Chapter 1 – The Footage They Never Wanted Anyone to See

For the first time that night...

I watched confidence disappear from Preston's face.

It lasted less than a second.

Then he laughed.

"CCTV?" he scoffed. "You're bluffing."

Maybe he believed the cameras didn't work.

Maybe he believed no one would dare check.

Or maybe he had planned everything so carefully that he'd forgotten one simple truth.

Cameras don't lie.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.

This time, several guests shifted uneasily.

Someone whispered.

"The camera..."

Another guest turned toward the blinking red light above the ballroom entrance.

Suddenly everyone noticed it.

Preston noticed it too.

His face lost every trace of color.

"You don't need the police," my father said quickly.

"We're family."

I looked at him as if he were a stranger.

"No," I answered.

"We stopped being family the moment you chose his lie over her blood."

The ambulance arrived within minutes.

Paramedics rushed Sophie onto a stretcher.

She never cried.

She only held my hand.

"Mommy... did I do something bad?"

Those words hurt more than anything Preston had done.

I kissed her forehead.

"You did absolutely nothing wrong."

While doctors treated Sophie, two police officers remained behind at the hotel.

One simple request.

"We need to review the security footage."

Preston stepped forward immediately.

"The cameras have been malfunctioning."

A hotel manager frowned.

"No, sir."

"They were serviced three days ago."

Silence.

The manager unlocked the security office.

Everyone followed.

Parents.

Guests.

The bride.

Even Preston.

The footage rolled.

There was Sophie, sitting beside me the entire evening.

Never leaving her chair.

Never approaching Preston.

Then another camera angle appeared.

Twenty-two minutes before Preston announced the theft.

He walked past our table.

Smiling.

He pretended to greet guests.

His hand slipped casually into Sophie's hanging jacket.

Three seconds later...

He walked away.

The phone was already inside her pocket.

No one breathed.

The room had just witnessed the truth.

Frame by frame.

Without a single word from me.

The officer paused the video.

He turned slowly toward Preston.

"Would you like to explain this?"

May you like

For the first time in his life...

Preston had no answer.
