Chapter 5 — The Promise That Never Changed

Chapter 5 — The Promise That Never Changed

One year later...

The same garden looked completely different.

No wedding decorations.

No orchestra.

No photographers.

Only family.

Friends.

And laughter.

My mother had organized a summer picnic.

Sophie raced across the grass with her cousins.

Her laughter echoed beneath the oak trees.

No fear remained in her eyes.

She was simply a child again.

"Dad!"

She ran toward me carrying a small cardboard box.

"I made something."

Inside sat another tiny castle.

Just like the one we'd built before my wedding day.

Only this one had two figures standing together.

One tall.

One small.

Above the doorway she had written in colorful marker:

HOME IS WHERE DAD IS.

I looked at her.

"What made you think of this?"

She smiled.

"Because home isn't a house."

"It's wherever you keep your promise."

I hugged her tightly.

"I'll never stop."

Years later...

People occasionally asked whether I regretted walking away from the altar.

I always answered the same way.

"I didn't lose a bride that day."

"I found the truth."

The most important decision I ever made wasn't refusing to say, "I do."

It was choosing the little hand reaching for mine over the woman waiting beneath the flowers.

Because weddings last one day.

A father's promise lasts a lifetime.

And every single night before Sophie went to sleep...

She still asked the same question.

"Dad?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"You still love me the most?"

I smiled exactly as I had years before.

"There isn't a day in this world that could ever change that."

She smiled.

Closed her eyes.

And slept peacefully.

May you like

This time...

She knew my promise would never change.
