Chapter 5: What Remains After Justice

Chapter 5: What Remains After Justice
Nearly a year later...
The courtroom overflowed with journalists.
Santiago entered wearing a gray prison uniform instead of an Italian suit.
He looked older.
Smaller.
His confidence had disappeared.
The prosecutor presented hundreds of hours of recordings.
Medical experts confirmed years of abuse.
Financial investigators revealed millions hidden through fraudulent corporations.
Former employees testified.
Former friends testified.
Even members of his own executive team testified.
The verdict required less than three hours.
"Guilty."
On every count.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Domestic violence.
Conspiracy.
Attempted unlawful deprivation of parental custody.
The judge imposed a lengthy prison sentence and ordered massive financial restitution to the victims of his schemes.
As deputies escorted him away, Santiago turned toward me one last time.
"I loved you."
His voice barely carried across the courtroom.
I met his eyes without anger.
"No."
"You loved control."
"Love never leaves bruises."
He lowered his head.
The courtroom doors closed behind him forever.
Outside, sunlight warmed the courthouse steps.
My father stood beside me.
Mateo laughed from his stroller as pigeons fluttered across the plaza.
I picked him up.
He reached for my face with tiny hands.
The scars on my body would remain.
Some memories would never disappear.
But fear no longer decided how I lived.
Neither did the man who tried to erase me.
As we walked away, my father smiled.
"You know," he said, "when you were little, you always believed every ending was really the beginning of another story."
I looked at my son.
At the family waiting beside me.
At the future no one could steal again.
"I still do."
May you like
And this time...
I was finally right.
