Chapter 2: The Man Santiago Should Never Have Crossed

Chapter 2: The Man Santiago Should Never Have Crossed
The silence inside the mansion stretched so long it became unbearable.
Santiago recovered first.
He straightened his cuffs and forced a confident smile.
"I'm sorry," he said politely. "Who exactly are you?"
The older man removed his leather gloves one finger at a time.
"My name is Ricardo Salazar."
No one moved.
Even the security guards hired by Santiago exchanged uncertain glances.
Then Ricardo's eyes settled on me.
For one terrifying second, I wasn't the frightened wife trapped inside a gilded prison.
I was simply his daughter.
His face softened.
"Valeria."
My knees almost gave out.
"Dad..."
He crossed the marble floor without hesitation and gently wrapped his coat around my shoulders.
His hands trembled as he noticed the fading bruises on my wrists.
Another bruise peeked above the collar of my dress.
His breathing changed.
Not louder.
Colder.
He looked at Santiago.
"You did this."
It wasn't a question.
Santiago laughed nervously.
"I think there's been some misunderstanding."
"My wife is emotional because of the pregnancy."
"She exaggerates."
Ricardo turned toward one of the attorneys.
"Record that statement."
The attorney clicked his pen.
"Recorded."
Santiago frowned.
"What is this?"
Ricardo reached into his briefcase and placed a thick folder onto the marble table.
Inside were photographs.
Medical reports.
Bank transfers.
Copies of forged psychiatric evaluations.
Every page carried dates.
Signatures.
Evidence.
Beatriz's wineglass slipped from her hand and shattered across the floor.
"No..."
she whispered.
"Impossible."
Ricardo looked directly at her.
"You forged medical records."
"You bribed two physicians."
"You attempted to fabricate evidence declaring my daughter mentally incompetent."
His voice never rose.
It didn't need to.
Every word landed like a hammer.
Santiago stared at me.
"You told him?"
I shook my head.
"I didn't have to."
Then one of Ricardo's attorneys connected a laptop to the television hanging above the fireplace.
The screen flickered.
Suddenly, the living room filled with Santiago's own voice.
"You're nothing without me."
Another clip.
"If you don't sign, you'll never see your son."
Another.
His hand striking my face.
The impact echoed through the room.
No one spoke.
The footage continued.
Threat after threat.
Lie after lie.
Every second had been captured by the hidden camera inside the mantel clock.
Santiago lunged toward the television.
"You recorded me?"
"I'll sue all of you!"
Ricardo remained perfectly calm.
"You won't."
He nodded toward the front entrance.
The massive oak doors opened again.
This time uniformed officers entered carrying official warrants.
The lead detective unfolded a document.
"Santiago Rivas."
"You are under investigation for domestic violence, conspiracy to commit fraud, document forgery, coercive control, attempted unlawful confinement, and conspiracy to obtain custody through falsified evidence."
The color drained from Santiago's face.
"This is ridiculous."
"I'm a respected businessman."
The detective answered quietly.
"Not anymore."
As officers approached him, Santiago pointed at me.
"She belongs to me!"
Ricardo stepped between us.
"No."
His voice carried decades of authority.
"My daughter never belonged to anyone."
The handcuffs clicked shut.

For the first time in years...
Santiago looked afraid.
