Chapter 9 - THE BLUE ROOM

The room contained decades of corruption.

Daniel saw it in the filenames.

Pension transfers.

Environmental settlements.

Bribery ledgers.

Private surveillance.

Judges.

Politicians.

Union leaders.

Competitors.

Employees.

Brooks Meridian had not merely conducted business.

It had collected leverage.

Margaret stood beside a terminal, reading rapidly.

“This archive could destroy half the board.”

“Copy everything.”

“The system is encrypted.”

Julian’s face remained on the main screen.

“You cannot download it without my authorization.”

Daniel looked toward a camera mounted in the ceiling.

“What do you want?”

“Sign the transfer documents.”

“The logistics sale.”

“Yes.”

“You’re selling it to yourself.”

Julian smiled.

“Not directly.”

“Serena owns the company?”

“She owns enough.”

Margaret whispered that she had found a connection.

The purchasing entity was controlled through a Swiss trust.

One beneficiary was Serena Walsh.

The other was Julian.

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“You planned this before Serena married me.”

“Serena planned it before Rachel died.”

The words struck with deliberate cruelty.

Julian continued.

“She needed access to your trust.”

“You helped kill Rachel?”

“I helped Serena understand how your family protected itself.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

“It isn’t.”

Daniel looked at the screen showing Richard and Marcus.

They appeared to be inside an industrial building.

A yellow safety marker behind them bore the Brooks Meridian logo.

“Which property are they in?”

Julian laughed.

“You own more than two hundred.”

Margaret studied the footage.

“There’s frost on the pipes.”

“A refrigerated facility,” Daniel said.

Brooks Meridian operated twelve cold-storage warehouses.

He looked at the clock on the wall behind Richard.

It showed the time as 11:57.

The second hand did not move.

A broken clock.

Daniel remembered an inspection report from years earlier.

The North Harbor facility’s main clock had stopped after a refrigerant leak.

Employees joked that time had frozen with the inventory.

He sent the location silently to Detective Ellis.

Julian’s expression changed.

“You should not use your phone in this room.”

The device in Daniel’s hand shut down remotely.

Margaret’s phone did the same.

The locks engaged.

Julian placed the sale agreement on the screen.

“You have twelve minutes.”

“What happens after twelve?”

“The room purges itself.”

“With us inside?”

“The archive was designed by your grandfather.”

Daniel understood.

Evidence destruction included witnesses.

Margaret searched the walls.

“There must be an emergency release.”

Julian continued speaking.

“Your father used this room for years.”

“He recorded everyone.”

“Including you.”

A video opened.

It showed Daniel in his office after Rachel’s funeral.

He was throwing a glass against the wall.

Another showed him drunk and shouting at Richard.

Another showed him telling Marcus he wanted to kill whoever caused the accident.

Edited together, the clips looked like a confession.

“These files will be released if you refuse,” Julian said.

“No one will believe the evidence against Serena after they see what you are.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“You misunderstand me.”

“I understand you perfectly.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice became calm.

“You think I still care whether people believe I’m a good man.”

Julian’s smile faded slightly.

“I care whether my children are safe.”

“Then sign.”

“The document will not protect them.”

“It will remove the reason Serena needs them.”

“She will kill them because they can identify her.”

Julian looked toward someone off-screen.

Daniel saw uncertainty.

Serena had promised Julian a clean transfer.

Perhaps she had not explained every part of the plan.

“You don’t trust her,” Daniel said.

“Do not waste time.”

“She killed Rachel.”

“That has not been proven.”

“She tried to kill Rosa.”

“Serena said Rosa attacked her.”

“She abused children for months.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“You financed her.”

“I financed a strategy.”

“You financed bruises on a six-year-old boy.”

Margaret found a maintenance hatch near the floor.

It required two keys.

Daniel searched the desk.

One key hung beneath the main console.

The other was absent.

A countdown appeared.

TEN MINUTES TO ARCHIVE PURGE.

Daniel returned to the terminal.

“If I sign, do you release Richard and Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“Show Serena agreeing.”

“That is unnecessary.”

“Then the deal is unnecessary.”

Julian muted the feed.

His image disappeared.

Margaret opened drawers.

She found a collection of old security badges.

One belonged to Rachel.

Daniel held it.

Rachel had entered the blue room.

A data chip was embedded along the edge.

Margaret inserted it into a slot.

The terminal changed.

RACHEL BROOKS ARCHIVE ACCESS.

A video opened automatically.

Rachel appeared on-screen.

She sat in the same room.

Her face looked tired but determined.

“If Daniel is watching this, then I was not able to tell him myself.”

He stopped breathing.

Rachel continued.

“Richard’s crimes created Serena Walsh.”

“That does not excuse what Serena has done.”

“She believes destroying the company will restore what her family lost.”

“But Julian Voss does not care about justice.”

“He wants the archive because it contains proof that he has stolen from every partner he ever had.”

Margaret copied files while Rachel spoke.

The archive began transferring through an old backup channel Julian did not control.

“Serena told me she would expose Richard.”

“I believed her.”

“Then I discovered she planned to replace him, not stop him.”

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“She has been close to Daniel before.”

A photograph appeared.

It showed Serena standing behind Daniel at a corporate event seven years earlier.

He had not noticed her.

“She studies people until she knows what they need.”

“Daniel needed someone to forgive him for working when I died.”

“She became that person.”

Tears blurred Daniel’s vision.

Rachel’s final instruction concerned a hidden release lever behind the west server rack.

Margaret found it.

The purge countdown reached six minutes.

The lever opened the maintenance hatch.

They crawled into a narrow shaft.

Before leaving, Daniel removed Rachel’s access chip.

The blue room began flooding with white gas.

They reached the service corridor as alarms activated.

Margaret’s copied drive contained thirty-one percent of the archive.

Enough to expose Julian.

Possibly enough to implicate Richard.

They called Detective Ellis.

Police were already moving toward North Harbor.

Daniel insisted on joining them.

At the warehouse, tactical officers surrounded the building.

No gunshots had been heard.

Thermal cameras showed four people inside.

Richard.

Marcus.

One guard.

A fourth figure moving near the loading dock.

Police entered.

The guard surrendered.

Marcus was found chained to a support column.

Richard was alive but unconscious.

The fourth person had escaped through a storm drain.

Near the exit, police recovered a black satin scarf.

Serena’s perfume remained on it.

Marcus was taken to the hospital.

Before paramedics loaded him into the ambulance, he grabbed Daniel’s wrist.

“Serena wasn’t working for Julian.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What?”

“Julian was working for her.”

Marcus struggled to breathe.

“She has another partner.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked toward the warehouse roof.

A sniper’s laser appeared against his chest.

Daniel pulled him down.

A bullet struck the ambulance door.

Police opened fire toward the rooftop.

The shooter disappeared.

Marcus survived.

The bullet had missed him by inches.

Detective Ellis searched the roof.

She found no weapon.

Only a company security badge.

It belonged to Claire Donovan, Daniel’s attorney:
