Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE IN DARKNESS

Daniel pushed Ava and Noah into the bedroom closet.

“Stay silent until I come back.”

Ava grabbed his sleeve.

“Don’t leave us.”

“I’m right outside.”

He locked the closet from the inside latch, then closed the bedroom door behind him.

The Lake Briar house had been designed as a family retreat, not a fortress.

Marcus had promised to upgrade its security after Rachel died.

Daniel now wondered whether every system contained weaknesses Marcus had intentionally created.

A shadow moved near the staircase.

Daniel lowered himself behind the banister.

He had no weapon.

The children were behind him.

That was enough.

The intruder entered the hallway holding a flashlight.

Daniel waited until the beam passed.

Then he drove his shoulder into the man’s side.

They struck the wall.

The flashlight fell.

The intruder swung blindly.

Daniel blocked the blow and shoved him down the stairs.

A second man appeared below.

Before he could climb, a gunshot cracked outside.

The man turned.

Police lights flooded the windows.

Detective Ellis had ordered an unmarked surveillance unit to remain near the property after the threat.

The intruders ran toward the rear entrance.

One escaped into the woods.

The other was arrested beside the boathouse.

He identified himself as Caleb Stone, a private-security contractor.

His phone contained messages from a prepaid number.

The sender ordered him to recover “Rachel’s archive” and destroy the blue-room key.

Daniel gave Detective Ellis the flash drive.

“You should have done that earlier,” she said.

“I didn’t know who I could trust.”

“Do you trust me now?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop protecting evidence inside homes your enemies can enter.”

Daniel accepted the criticism.

Caleb refused to identify his employer.

His bank account showed a payment from Hale Strategic Investigations, a company owned by Victor Hale’s brother.

Victor claimed the payment involved unrelated legal work.

By morning, the story reached national news.

Brooks Meridian shares dropped eighteen percent.

Julian issued a statement placing Daniel on indefinite administrative leave.

The board appointed him acting chief executive.

Daniel’s access to company servers was revoked.

Margaret Chen called privately.

“Julian controls six directors.”

“How?”

“Three received consulting payments.”

“And the others?”

“Serena has information about them.”

“Blackmail.”

“I believe so.”

“Can you stop the takeover?”

“Not without evidence from inside the building.”

“The blue room.”

Margaret became quiet.

“Who told you about that?”

“Marcus.”

“I thought it was a rumor.”

“What rumor?”

“Your grandfather kept an undocumented records vault.”

“Where?”

“No one knows.”

“Rachel knew.”

Margaret sighed.

“Rachel asked me about restricted architectural plans before she died.”

Daniel felt the old grief open again.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She made me promise not to.”

“She was investigating my father.”

“She was trying to protect you.”

Daniel ended the call and drove to Richard’s estate.

Detective Ellis accompanied him.

Richard’s gates stood open.

The front door had been forced.

Inside, furniture was overturned.

Blood marked the library carpet.

Richard was gone.

A message had been painted across the wall.

THE EMPIRE OWES A DEBT.

The words echoed Serena’s history.

Detective Ellis ordered a full search.

Richard’s phone lay smashed beneath the desk.

His safe was open.

The Walsh Freight files were missing.

Daniel checked the security system.

All cameras had been disabled with an administrator code linked to Marcus.

“Marcus may have been forced,” he said.

“Or he may be playing both sides,” Detective Ellis replied.

Daniel hated the possibility.

Richard had spent his life creating enemies.

Serena was only one.

Police found tire tracks leading toward the highway.

No body.

No ransom demand.

Richard had either been kidnapped or had staged his disappearance.

Daniel returned to Lake Briar before sunset.

Ava and Noah were waiting beside the door.

He gathered them into his arms.

Ava looked behind him.

“Is Grandpa coming?”

“No.”

“Did Serena take him?”

“We don’t know.”

Noah whispered, “Maybe the blue room took him.”

Daniel pulled back.

“What does that mean?”

“Serena said people who entered the blue room never came back.”

Ava corrected him.

“She said their names didn’t come back.”

Daniel thought of shell companies, erased records, employees pushed out of the corporation.

The blue room might not be a physical chamber.

It could be a hidden server.

He accessed old architectural drawings for Brooks Meridian headquarters.

The tower had undergone three major renovations.

One section on the forty-sixth floor showed an unexplained gap between the legal archive and the executive conference rooms.

The space measured twenty feet by thirty feet.

There was no door on the plan.

Margaret obtained a maintenance schedule.

A cooling malfunction had been reported inside that wall two months earlier.

The repair authorization was signed by Julian Voss.

Daniel called Claire Donovan.

“I need legal access to the building.”

“You are suspended.”

“I’m still the majority shareholder.”

“Your voting authority is being contested.”

“Can we obtain an injunction?”

“Not tonight.”

Daniel looked at the children.

He could not break into his own company while responsible for their safety.

Then Margaret sent a message.

The board had scheduled a midnight session.

Julian planned to approve the sale of Brooks Meridian’s logistics division to a foreign investment group.

The division was worth billions.

The proposed sale price was less than half its value.

The purchasing company had been incorporated three weeks earlier.

Its beneficial owner was hidden.

Daniel recognized the strategy.

Julian was stripping the corporation before the fraud could be exposed.

He contacted Detective Ellis.

“If that sale closes, the money disappears.”

“We need probable cause connected to a crime.”

“The forty-eight-million-dollar transfers.”

“Those records came from your house and are being challenged as planted.”

“What about the attack tonight?”

“Caleb Stone is not talking.”

Daniel turned toward the window.

The corporate tower glowed in the distance.

Rachel had tried to reveal its secrets.

Now Richard was missing.

Marcus was a hostage or traitor.

His children were targets.

Daniel made a decision.

“I’m going inside.”

Claire objected.

Detective Ellis warned him he could be arrested.

Margaret offered a safer method.

An old service tunnel connected the neighboring hotel’s utility level to Brooks Meridian’s basement.

It had been sealed after the tower renovation.

Margaret still had the access code.

At eleven thirty, Daniel stood beneath the hotel wearing a maintenance uniform.

Detective Ellis could not authorize the entry.

She also did not stop him.

“You find evidence,” she said, “and you call me before touching anything.”

Daniel entered the tunnel with Margaret.

They reached the tower basement.

The code opened the service door.

No alarm sounded.

Someone had already disabled it.

Footprints marked the dust.

They followed them to a freight elevator.

A smear of blood crossed the control panel.

Margaret pressed the forty-sixth-floor button.

The elevator climbed.

When the doors opened, the corridor was dark.

At the end stood a section of blue-painted wall.

Daniel touched it.

The panel slid inward.

Cold air moved from the hidden room.

Inside, computer screens covered every surface.

One displayed live footage from Lake Briar.

Another showed Richard tied to a chair.

A third showed Marcus kneeling on the floor beside him.

Julian’s voice came through a speaker.

“Welcome, Daniel.”

The hidden door closed behind them.

Julian appeared on the largest screen.

“You finally found the room your family built to bury the truth.”

Daniel looked toward the live image of his father.

“Where are they?”

Julian smiled.

“Close enough to hear you choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Your company or your father.”

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“What happens if I refuse?”

May you like

Julian’s smile vanished.

“Then Serena keeps your children, Richard dies, and every secret in this room becomes your crime:”
