Six months later...
The mansion no longer belonged to Gertrude.
A judge ordered financial restitution after reviewing years of bank records and witness testimony.
Most of the remaining assets were sold to repay what had been stolen.
Prudence moved into a small apartment.
Her expensive friends disappeared almost overnight.
Without money, she discovered how temporary admiration could be.
Gertrude tried calling me dozens of times.
She wrote letters.
She cried.
She apologized.
But every apology arrived only after she lost everything.
Not after my son went hungry.
Not after Sarah slept in a storage room.

He smiled.

Sarah slipped her hand into mine.
"We're finally home."
I looked around our small kitchen.
No marble floors.

No luxury.
Just peace.

Years later, Jamie asked me what the greatest lesson of my life had been.
