Chapter 1 – The Dinner Stopped

Chapter 1 – The Dinner Stopped

Prudence stood frozen.

The silver tray slipped from her hands and crashed onto the kitchen floor. Roasted chicken scattered across the concrete.

The music inside continued for only a few more seconds.

Then someone heard the noise.

The laughter faded.

"What happened?" a guest called.

I never took my eyes off my sister.

"So," I said quietly, "this is where my wife and son have been living."

Prudence swallowed.

"David... you're home early."

"I asked you a question."

She couldn't answer.

Sarah slowly stood, still shielding Jamie with one arm.

Her eyes filled with tears, but she said nothing.

She had spent years learning that silence was safer than speaking.

Not anymore.

Footsteps echoed through the hallway.

My mother appeared first, smiling until she saw me.

Her face drained of color.

"David!"

She rushed toward me with open arms.

"My son! Why didn't you tell us—"

I stepped backward before she could touch me.

The smile disappeared.

Guests gathered near the doorway, whispering among themselves.

My mother forced another laugh.

"Everyone, this is just a misunderstanding."

I reached into my duffel bag.

"I agree."

Then I placed a thick folder onto the dining table.

Bank transfers.

Receipts.

Five years of them.

"I sent eighteen hundred dollars every month."

Silence.

"That's one hundred eight thousand dollars."

Every guest looked at Gertrude.

I continued.

"Can someone explain why my wife and child were eating spoiled rice behind the house while you hosted parties inside?"

No one spoke.

My mother's confidence cracked.

"Sarah exaggerates."

"I never complained," Sarah whispered.

The room became even quieter.

Prudence tried to interrupt.

"They were lazy. They didn't deserve—"

"Enough."

My voice echoed through the room.

I looked at Jamie.

"Son."

He hesitated.

"Come here."

For a moment he simply stared.

Then he slowly walked toward me.

When he wrapped his small arms around my waist, I felt how thin he had become.

I held him tighter than I ever thought possible.

"I'm home now."

"You'll never be hungry again."

Jamie began to cry.

So did Sarah.

And for the first time that night...

Everyone else looked ashamed.
