Chapter 12 - MIA’S REAL STORY

We found Mia in Tennessee.

She had checked into a roadside motel under her real name.

The police located her after she used a hospital payment card connected to Blue Heron.

She agreed to speak with investigators only after being shown Julian’s medical records.

According to Priya, Mia stared at the vasectomy invoice for nearly ten minutes.

Then she asked for a lawyer.

Two days later, Mia requested to meet me.

Daniel advised against it.

I agreed anyway.

We met inside a protected interview room at the district attorney’s office.

Mia wore county-issued clothing because she had been arrested on suspicion of fraud and conspiracy.

Her hair was tied back.

Without the dresses, perfume, and delicate performance, she looked exhausted rather than young.

“I didn’t set the fire,” she said.

“You had Paul’s access code.”

“Beatrice used it.”

“Miguel saw an older woman.”

“She told me she was only going to scare you.”

“Forty-two families live above my flagship spa.”

“I didn’t know about that threat.”

“You knew about Phase Two.”

Her face tightened.

“Yes.”

“You agreed to destroy my reputation.”

“My mother needed treatment.”

“So you sold mine.”

Tears filled her eyes.

I did not trust them.

“You were right,” she said. “I cry first.”

“Laura warned me.”

Mia looked startled.

“She’s alive?”

I did not answer.

“Tell me about the baby.”

Mia placed a hand over her stomach.

“I thought Julian was the father.”

“You signed a contract promising a Caldwell heir.”

“I signed before I slept with him.”

“Then whose child did you intend to carry?”

Her lips trembled.

“Adrian’s.”

The room went still.

Adrian Vale had recruited her through Beatrice.

He found Mia working at a hotel outside Lexington.

Her mother had kidney disease and no adequate insurance.

Adrian paid the hospital bills.

Then he introduced her to Beatrice.

“They said Julian needed help getting away from a controlling wife,” Mia whispered. “They showed me videos of you yelling.”

“Videos they created by provoking me.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew enough then.”

“Yes.”

The word came without excuse.

That made it more powerful than another performance.

Mia’s original role had been to tempt Julian and become pregnant by Adrian.

The child could then be presented as Julian’s.

Why?

Because a pregnancy would accelerate the divorce and create public sympathy.

Later, a manipulated paternity test would establish Julian as the legal father.

The baby would provide emotional leverage and strengthen Julian’s claim that he needed access to family assets.

“Why did you sleep with Julian if Adrian was involved?”

“Because Julian said the contract was only business.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Her answer echoed my own life.

That did not make us equal.

It made the trap familiar.

Julian promised Mia that after taking control of Sanctuary Wellness, he would leave me and marry her.

He said Adrian was dangerous.

He said Beatrice was controlling them both.

“He made me feel chosen,” she said.

“He makes people feel studied. We mistake it for being seen.”

Mia looked at me.

“I hated you.”

“Why?”

“Because you had everything.”

“I gave you a home.”

“That made it worse.”

The honesty cut deeper than an apology.

“You were kind without needing anything from me. I kept thinking it had to be fake.”

“So you proved yourself right.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Mia admitted helping create the workplace-abuse allegations.

She planted lilies.

She left lipstick on Julian’s shirt.

She staged the towel incident.

She installed the hidden bathroom camera while pretending to clean.

“Did you watch the recordings?”

“No.”

“Did Julian?”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

“Did he save private footage of me?”

“He kept everything.”

“Where?”

“On the old laptop.”

“The college laptop?”

“No. Another one.”

“Where is it?”

Mia hesitated.

“Julian’s office.”

“Police searched it.”

“Not his company office.”

“What other office?”

“Blue Heron has a room beneath the Vale Hotel.”

Adrian’s family owned a boutique hotel downtown.

The basement room had no public listing.

Mia gave us the access code.

Before the interview ended, I asked the question that had followed me for days.

“Who sent the threat after the spa fire?”

“Beatrice.”

“How do you know?”

“She called me from the cabin.”

“What did she say?”

“That she had crossed a line and there was no way back.”

“Why did she burn the cabin?”

“She found Laura’s files. They proved Robert Vale had planned to abandon her after using her identity in his schemes.”

Beatrice had spent decades defending a dead man who had intended to discard her.

Rather than accept that she had been manipulated, she became his most faithful student.

Mia wiped her face.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Julian knew you had discovered the affair before the anniversary.”

“How?”

“He found your evidence journal.”

My breath caught.

“When?”

“Three weeks earlier.”

“Why didn’t he confront me?”

“He wanted you to proceed.”

The anniversary scene had not surprised him.

He had allowed me to find them because the humiliation campaign needed footage.

“Did he know I had an attorney?”

“No.”

That was the part that ruined him.

Mia leaned closer.

“Julian has a second plan.”

“What kind of plan?”

“If Blue Heron fails, he intends to leave the country.”

“With what money?”

“He has cryptocurrency accounts.”

“Where are the access keys?”

“On the hidden laptop.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

May you like

She swallowed.

“But Adrian said it was more than twelve million dollars.”
