Chapter 2 - THE FAMILY ARRIVES

The first person to arrive was Beatrice.

Of course it was.

She entered without knocking, carrying a bottle of champagne and wearing a pearl-gray dress I had bought her for Christmas.

“Harper?” she called. “What is this mysterious surprise?”

The pounding from the bathroom stopped.

For one perfect second, the house held its breath.

Then Julian shouted through the locked door.

“Mom!”

Beatrice froze.

The champagne bottle slipped in her hand but did not fall.

“Julian?”

“Get Harper to open this door!”

Beatrice looked at me.

I remained seated on the sofa, one leg crossed over the other, my hands resting peacefully in my lap.

“What is he doing in there?” she whispered.

“You should ask him.”

Her face changed.

Not with surprise.

With calculation.

She set the champagne on the entry table and walked toward the hallway.

“Harper, unlock that door immediately.”

“No.”

Her head snapped toward me.

“No?”

“I invited you here to see Julian’s anniversary gift. It would be rude to unwrap it before everyone arrives.”

“Stop behaving like a lunatic.”

There it was.

The word she had been waiting to use.

Lunatic.

Not betrayed.

Not devastated.

Not humiliated.

Lunatic.

Before I could answer, another car pulled into the driveway.

Julian’s sister Celeste arrived with her husband, Mark, and their sixteen-year-old daughter, Sophie.

Celeste entered laughing.

“I left a dinner reservation for this, so the aquatic performance had better involve—”

Julian struck the bathroom door from the other side.

“Celeste!”

She stopped.

“What the hell?”

Beatrice moved toward her quickly.

“Take Sophie outside.”

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

Sophie looked at me.

Unlike the adults, she understood immediately that something terrible had happened.

“Aunt Harper?”

“I’m all right,” I told her.

It was not true.

But it was the first lie I had told that evening, and unlike Julian’s lies, mine was meant to protect someone.

Mark guided Sophie toward the kitchen, but she resisted.

“What’s Uncle Julian doing in the bathroom?”

Mia began crying behind the door.

Celeste’s face emptied.

She looked at Beatrice.

Then at me.

Then back toward the hallway.

“Is that Mia?”

I said nothing.

I did not need to.

The silence answered for me.

More headlights swept across the front windows.

Julian’s father, Thomas, entered next.

Thomas Caldwell had spent most of his life speaking softly enough that other people could pretend he had not spoken at all.

He was seventy, silver-haired, and permanently exhausted by his wife.

He looked from Beatrice to Celeste, then toward the hallway.

“What happened?”

“Harper has lost her mind,” Beatrice said.

Julian shouted again.

“Dad, call the police!”

Thomas flinched.

Mark stepped out of the kitchen.

“Julian, are you alone in there?”

No answer.

Then Mia whispered something too quietly for us to hear.

A second later, Julian said, “This is a misunderstanding.”

Celeste laughed once.

It was a small, broken sound.

“A misunderstanding?”

She walked toward the bathroom door.

“Julian, are you naked in Harper’s jacuzzi with the housekeeper?”

“Celeste, stay out of this.”

“That sounds like a yes.”

Beatrice grabbed her arm.

“Do not make this worse.”

Celeste pulled away.

“Mom, did you know?”

Beatrice’s eyes flickered.

That was all it took.

Celeste stared at her.

“Oh my God.”

The doorbell rang again.

This time, Daniel Morris stood outside.

He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Beside him was a woman holding a video camera.

Beatrice’s face tightened.

“Who is that?”

“My attorney,” I said.

Julian heard me.

The pounding became violent.

“Harper, you conniving—”

He stopped before finishing the sentence.

Daniel entered and nodded calmly to the family.

“This is Ms. Rebecca Shaw,” he said, indicating the woman with the camera. “She is an independent legal videographer. She will document what happens from this point forward.”

“You cannot record us without permission,” Beatrice snapped.

“Inside Mrs. Caldwell’s residence, in connection with anticipated litigation, we can document the condition of the property and the conduct of the relevant parties.”

“The house belongs to Julian too.”

Daniel glanced at me.

“We will discuss ownership shortly.”

Beatrice turned pale.

I stood.

The movement silenced everyone.

I walked toward the hallway with Daniel and Rebecca behind me.

Beatrice followed.

Celeste and Mark came next.

Thomas remained near the living room, looking as though he wanted to disappear into the furniture.

I stopped outside the bathroom.

“Julian,” I said.

His voice came instantly.

“Open the door.”

“I’m going to.”

The anger behind the door softened.

“That’s right. Open it, Harper. We can talk about this privately.”

“No.”

My hand rested on the key.

“We are finished speaking privately.”

I unlocked the door.

Julian pushed it open so hard that it struck the wall.

He stood wrapped in a wet bath mat, his hair dripping, his face twisted with fury.

Mia crouched behind him inside the jacuzzi, covering herself with bubbles and rose petals.

She looked terrified.

For half a second, I almost felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered her sitting on my sofa while Beatrice taught her how to weaponize tears against me.

Beatrice gasped dramatically.

Celeste covered her mouth.

Thomas looked away.

Rebecca’s camera continued recording.

Julian charged toward me.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Do not touch my client.”

“This is my wife.”

“Not for much longer.”

Daniel opened his briefcase.

He removed a thick envelope and held it out.

Julian stared at it.

“What is that?”

“My actual anniversary gift,” I said.

Daniel placed the envelope against Julian’s bare chest.

“You have been served with a petition for divorce,” he said. “You have also been served with notice of an emergency application concerning marital assets, preservation of financial records, and exclusive temporary use of the residence.”

Julian’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Mia began sobbing.

Beatrice moved toward her.

“Mia, darling, are you hurt?”

The performance had begun exactly as planned.

Mia climbed from the tub with a towel around her body.

“She locked us in,” she cried. “I couldn’t breathe. I thought I was going to die.”

“You were inside for eleven minutes,” I said.

Rebecca raised the camera slightly.

“The ventilation remained active, the water temperature was controlled, and the door was opened as soon as all adult witnesses arrived.”

Beatrice pointed at me.

“You planned this humiliation.”

“Yes.”

The honesty stunned her.

I walked past Julian and entered the living room.

Everyone followed.

On the wall above the fireplace hung a large television.

I picked up the remote.

Julian saw the screen change.

His face drained of color.

“Harper,” he said carefully, “whatever you think you have—”

“I don’t think.”

I selected the first video file.

“I know.”

The screen showed my living room two weeks earlier.

Beatrice appeared on the sofa.

Julian sat across from her.

Mia brought her a glass of water.

Then Beatrice’s recorded voice filled the house.

“Men get bored.”

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The woman standing beside me listened to herself explain how my husband should keep me happy while moving my assets out from under me.

Celeste slowly turned toward her mother.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Julian stared at the floor.

Mia’s sobbing stopped.

When the recording reached Beatrice’s final instruction—make Harper look cruel—the room became colder than the marble beneath our feet.

I paused the video.

“That,” I said, “was the performance I invited you to watch.”

Julian looked at his family.

Then he looked at me.

His expression changed again.

The shame disappeared.

Something darker replaced it.

“You think you won?” he asked.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mr. Caldwell, I strongly advise you to say nothing further.”

Julian smiled.

It was not the smile I had married.

That man had never existed.

“You have cameras in this house,” he said. “You have lawyers and bank records and your perfect little plan.”

He looked around the room.

“But Harper forgot one thing.”

“What?” Celeste whispered.

May you like

Julian’s eyes stayed on mine.

“I have evidence too.”
