Chapter 1 – He Didn't Raise His Voice… He Changed the Locks Instead

Marcus never rushed when he was angry.

That was what frightened people most.

While Brenda continued demanding an apology she clearly believed she deserved, Marcus typed without hesitation. Every tap of his thumb echoed louder than the shouting filling the living room.

Rachel folded her arms.

"So now you're texting your lawyer? That's dramatic."

Marcus didn't look up.

"No."

Another tap.

"I'm emailing him."

Brenda laughed.

"You'd hire an attorney against your own mother?"

Marcus finally raised his eyes.

"I already did."

Silence settled over the room.

"My attorney has been preparing documents for months."

Maya looked up in surprise.

"You... what?"

Marcus walked toward her, slipping the phone into his pocket.

"I noticed things changing after Mom started inviting herself over."

He brushed a loose strand of hair from Maya's face.

"I hoped I was wrong."

His voice softened.

"I wasn't."

Brenda's confidence cracked for the first time.

"What documents?"

Marcus answered calmly.

"A formal notice revoking your access to this property."

Rachel rolled her eyes.

"We have a key."

"You had one."

Marcus held out his hand.

"Give it back."

"No."

He nodded once.

"I already disabled the smart lock twenty minutes before we got home."

Rachel instinctively reached into her purse.

Her face turned pale.

"You changed the code?"

"I changed everything."

Brenda stared at her son as though meeting a stranger.

"You planned this."

"No," Marcus replied.

"I prepared for the day I'd finally have to protect my family."

For the first time all afternoon...

Brenda had nothing to say.
