CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Who Believed She Couldn't Lose

Vanessa wasn't worried.
She was confident.
Beautiful people always believed they could explain everything away.
By noon, she was sitting in my lawyer's conference room wearing a cream designer suit, acting offended.
"She's manipulating him," Vanessa told Detective Elena Brooks. "Children imagine things."
The detective remained expressionless.
Then she placed a tablet on the table.
"Let's imagine together."
The first video began.
Vanessa watched herself dragging Lily across the kitchen floor.
The second showed her threatening the child.
"If you tell Daddy," the recording captured her saying, "I'll send you away forever."
The room became silent.
Vanessa swallowed.
"I..."
The third clip started.
Then the fourth.
By the tenth video...
Even her attorney stopped taking notes.
"I wasn't myself," Vanessa whispered.
"No," Detective Brooks replied.
"You were exactly yourself."
Minutes later, officers placed handcuffs around Vanessa's wrists.
As they escorted her through the lobby, reporters had already gathered outside.
The woman who had spent years chasing social status suddenly became tomorrow's biggest headline.
But none of it mattered to me.
I was sitting beside Lily's hospital bed.
She had finally fallen asleep without flinching every time someone entered the room.
The doctor approached quietly.
"Physically, she'll heal."
I nodded.
"And emotionally?"
The doctor looked at Lily for a long moment.
"That depends on whether she believes she's finally safe."
May you like
I reached for my daughter's hand.
"I'll spend the rest of my life proving she is."
