CHAPTER 7 — The Shadow Inside The House

I had always believed danger came from outside.

Strangers.

Enemies.

People who wanted something from me.

I never imagined the greatest threat could walk through my front door, sit at my dinner table, and know exactly where my children slept.

But that night changed everything.

Detective Harris arrived within minutes.

The first thing he did was check every entrance.

The cameras.

The locks.

The security system.

Nothing was broken.

Nothing was forced.

Whoever entered the house had a key.

Or someone had given them one.

That thought was worse.

Emily held the twins tightly as we waited in the living room.

Her hands were shaking.

Not because she was afraid for herself.

Because she was afraid for them.

"They're not going to take them again," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"They won't."

She looked at me sadly.

"You can't promise that."

And she was right.

Promises were easy.

The truth was much harder.

Detective Harris walked back into the room holding a small object.

"We found this."

It was a tiny memory card.

Hidden inside the nursery camera.

My heart sank.

"The person who entered planted this?"

He nodded.

"Looks like it."

"What is on it?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That worried me more than anything.

"We need to watch it."

He connected it to his laptop.

The screen showed the nursery.

My twins were sleeping.

The timestamp was from three nights earlier.

At first, nothing happened.

Then, at 2:13 a.m., the nursery door opened.

A figure walked in.

Wearing a dark coat.

The face was hidden.

The person stood beside the crib.

Watching the children.

Emily covered her mouth.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

The figure reached into their pocket.

Placed something beside the crib.

Then whispered something.

The audio was unclear.

Detective Harris increased the volume.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

A woman's voice.

A voice I recognized.

My blood turned cold.

Because it belonged to someone I thought was gone forever.

My mother's voice.

"I'm sorry, Daniel."

The room froze.

Emily looked at me.

"Your mother?"

I couldn't move.

The woman in the video turned slightly.

The camera caught part of her face.

Not my mother.

Someone wearing my mother's old scarf.

Someone pretending to be her.

Detective Harris paused the video.

"Someone is using your mother's identity."

"But why?"

He looked at the screen.

"To control you."

The video continued.

The woman placed a letter beside the crib.

Then looked directly into the camera.

As if she knew we would watch it someday.

Her voice became clearer.

"Daniel, if you're seeing this, it means you've started asking questions."

A chill went through me.

"You need to understand something. The truth about the twins is bigger than you think."

She stepped closer.

"They were never stolen."

Emily whispered:

"What?"

The woman continued.

"They were protected."

I stood up.

"Protected from what?"

The recording ended.

Just like that.

No explanation.

No answers.

Only more questions.

Detective Harris closed the laptop.

"Whoever created this wants you to follow a path."

"And you think it's a trap?"

"I know it is."

I looked toward the nursery.

Toward my children.

The children who had already lost so much before they could even understand what happened.

"I need to know the truth."

Detective Harris nodded.

"Then we start with the person who knows the most."

"Who?"

He opened the old documents again.

Pointed to one name.

A name we had overlooked.

The first person who helped Victoria.

The first person who knew Emily's children existed.

A woman who disappeared after the adoption was completed.

Dr. Claire Bennett.

"The doctor who signed the original birth records."

I stared at the name.

"Where is she now?"

Detective Harris looked at me.

"That's the problem."

"What?"

"She doesn't exist."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"No current records. No address. No employment history after that year."

He lowered his voice.

"According to official documents..."

A pause.

"Dr. Claire Bennett died fifteen years ago."

Silence filled the room.

But then Detective Harris placed another file on the table.

A recent photograph.

Taken two months earlier.

A woman walking into a private clinic.

Older.

Different hairstyle.

But unmistakable.

Emily gasped.

"That's her."

I looked at the photograph.

The woman who supposedly died fifteen years ago was alive.

And she was the only person who could explain why my twins were taken.

The next morning, we would find her.

But I already knew one thing.

The truth we were chasing wasn't just about the past.

May you like

Someone was still protecting the secret.

And they would do anything to keep it buried.
