CHAPTER 6 — The Person Behind The Secret

I stared at the message on my phone for nearly a full minute.

One sentence.

That was all it contained.

"You finally found the truth. But you still don't know why the twins were chosen."

No name.

No explanation.

Just a reminder that someone had been watching.

Someone who knew every hidden piece of our lives.

Emily stood beside me, her face pale.

"Daniel..."

I looked at her.

"Did you ever tell anyone about the twins?"

She shook her head immediately.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"I spent years believing one of them was gone. I had no reason to tell anyone."

Detective Harris took my phone and examined the message.

"This wasn't sent randomly."

"What do you mean?"

"The sender knew exactly when we found the letter."

He looked toward the documents on the table.

"Someone has access to information that should only be known by investigators."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Someone inside?"

"Possibly."

The idea was terrifying.

The person responsible wasn't just hiding.

They were watching.

That afternoon, we went through every document from my mother's safety deposit box.

Most of it was ordinary.

Old family records.

Financial papers.

Letters.

Until we found a small black notebook hidden beneath a stack of documents.

The cover was worn.

The pages were filled with my mother's handwriting.

The first few entries were simple.

Dates.

Names.

Meetings.

Then one entry made my blood run cold.

"Victoria is becoming unstable. She believes the children belong to her completely."

I looked at Emily.

My voice barely came out.

"She knew."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Your mother knew everything."

I turned the page.

The next entry was even worse.

"I thought giving Daniel a family would fix everything. I thought he would finally have the life he deserved."

My hands tightened around the notebook.

My mother had always told me she wanted me to be happy.

But I never imagined what she was willing to sacrifice to create that happiness.

Then I found a name.

A name that appeared dozens of times.

Alexander Cole.

My father.

But that wasn't possible.

My father had always claimed he had nothing to do with the adoption.

The notebook proved otherwise.

My mother had written:

"Alexander believes bloodline matters more than anything. He says the Cole name cannot disappear."

I stopped reading.

"The Cole name..."

Detective Harris looked at me.

"What is it?"

I turned the notebook around.

"He didn't want children."

The words felt strange coming out of my mouth.

"He wanted heirs."

The room went silent.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The obsession with reputation.

The need for a perfect family image.

The pressure my father had placed on me my entire life.

It was never about love.

It was about legacy.

But there was still one question.

Why Emily's twins?

Why these children?

The answer came from an old newspaper clipping tucked inside the notebook.

It was dated twenty years earlier.

The headline read:

"Cole Family Foundation Announces Major Expansion After Unexpected Donation."

Below the headline was a photograph.

My father.

Victoria's father.

And another man.

A man I recognized.

My grandfather's former business partner.

I looked closer.

The article mentioned a private agreement between three families.

An agreement that had been hidden from the public.

Detective Harris read it carefully.

"These families were connected for decades."

"What does that mean?"

He pointed to a paragraph.

"Your family had a tradition."

I frowned.

"What kind of tradition?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"Keeping wealth and influence within their circle."

Emily whispered:

"They chose children like they were choosing an inheritance."

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

The twins weren't taken because Victoria wanted babies.

They weren't taken because my father wanted a family.

They were chosen because someone believed their birth carried value.

A bloodline.

A name.

A future.

That evening, another message arrived.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

My hands shook as I opened it.

It showed the twins.

Sleeping peacefully.

Taken only minutes earlier.

Inside my own house.

My heart stopped.

Someone had been inside.

Emily grabbed my arm.

"Daniel..."

The message appeared below the picture.

"Stop searching. The children are safe because of us."

Then another message followed.

"But if you reveal the truth, you will lose them forever."

I immediately called Detective Harris.

The line connected.

"Daniel?"

"Someone was inside my house."

"What?"

I sent him the photo.

There was silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Leave the house immediately."

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent this message isn't trying to scare you."

A pause.

"They're warning you."

I looked around the room.

At the walls.

At the photographs.

At the home I thought I understood.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

The person who destroyed our family...

was still close enough to touch it.

May you like

And they had just reminded me of one thing.

They still had power.
