Chapter 3: The Empire Built on Lies

Morning sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of St. Augustine Medical Center, but it did little to warm the atmosphere inside the private intensive care suite.
Machines hummed steadily.
Monitors traced fragile green lines across glowing screens.
Emily Carter remained unconscious.
Bruises darkened her arms and shoulders, while a cast wrapped around her fractured wrist. The doctors had stabilized the internal bleeding during the night, but they refused to make promises.
Her unborn son was still alive.
Barely.
Outside the room, Jonathan Hayes stood with his hands in his pockets, staring through the glass.
For the first time in decades, the billionaire who had built a global empire worth billions felt utterly powerless.
Money could buy the best doctors.
Money could summon specialists from across the country.
Money could rebuild buildings, companies, and fortunes.
But it could not erase what had happened on those marble stairs.
A quiet voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Mr. Hayes?"
He turned.
Dr. Rebecca Morris approached, exhaustion visible beneath her eyes.
"We've controlled the bleeding."
Jonathan waited.
"The baby's condition has improved slightly."
He finally exhaled.
"But..."
"There always seems to be a 'but.'"
The doctor nodded sadly.
"Emily hasn't regained consciousness."
"Head trauma?"
"We believe she's suffering from severe cerebral swelling."
Jonathan looked through the glass again.
"Will she wake up?"
"I honestly don't know."
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Jonathan asked the question that had haunted him all night.
"If she does wake up..."
"Yes?"
"Will she remember what happened?"
The doctor hesitated.
"That's impossible to predict."
Across town...
Daniel Carter sat inside the conference room of Harrison & Cole Law Firm.
The expensive office overlooked the skyline, yet no one admired the view.
Attorney Richard Cole tossed a thick folder onto the polished table.
"What the hell were you thinking?"
Daniel rubbed his temples.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"No."
"It wasn't supposed to happen at all."
Vanessa sat silently in the corner, her eyes swollen from crying.
Richard opened the folder.
"The police have surveillance footage."
Daniel remained quiet.
"They have witnesses."
Still nothing.
"They have forensic evidence."
Finally Daniel looked up.
"They can't prove intent."
Richard stared at him.
"You honestly believe that?"
Daniel clenched his fists.
"I never touched her."
"No."
The lawyer leaned forward.
"But according to the footage..."
He slid a photograph across the table.
"...you nodded."
Daniel's face froze.
"They enlarged the video."
Vanessa whispered,
"It was barely noticeable."
Richard slammed both hands onto the table.
"Exactly!"
"A jury will spend three days watching that nod from every possible angle."
Silence settled over the room.
Then Richard spoke again.
"What worries me even more..."
He opened another file.
"...is Jonathan Hayes."
Daniel frowned.
"Who is he?"
The lawyer looked genuinely stunned.
"You don't know?"
Daniel shook his head.
Richard slowly removed a business magazine from his briefcase.
The cover displayed the face of one of America's most influential entrepreneurs.
JONATHAN HAYES
Founder of Hayes Global Holdings
Net Worth: $48 Billion
Vanessa's mouth slowly opened.
"No..."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel grabbed the magazine.
"This has to be a coincidence."
"It isn't."
Richard tossed another document toward him.
"Jonathan Hayes has officially retained our state's most successful criminal prosecution team."
Daniel looked confused.
"He hired prosecutors?"
"He hired former federal prosecutors to assist the district attorney."
Vanessa whispered,
"Why would he spend millions on Emily?"
Richard looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"Because..."
He placed one final document onto the table.
"...Emily Carter's birth name was Emily Hayes."
The room became perfectly still.
Daniel read the document twice.
Then a third time.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"That's impossible."
Richard slid forward an adoption record recovered only hours earlier.
"When Emily was four years old, she disappeared during the North River Mall fire."
Daniel stared blankly.
"Authorities believed she died."
"But she survived."
"A rescue volunteer found her unconscious."
"The fire destroyed every identifying document."
"No relatives were located."
"So she entered the foster care system."
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
Emily had told him pieces of her childhood.
The orphanages.
The foster homes.
The years of loneliness.
She simply hadn't known the truth herself.
Richard folded his hands.
"You married the missing heiress of one of the wealthiest families in America."
Meanwhile...
Inside Hayes Global Headquarters...
The forty-eighth floor had transformed into a war room.
Large digital screens displayed financial records, property maps, surveillance images, and corporate ownership charts.
Marcus Reed addressed Jonathan and a room filled with investigators.
"We've completed the preliminary financial audit."
Jonathan nodded.
"Show me."
The lights dimmed.
A massive organizational chart appeared.
Dozens of shell companies connected through complex layers of ownership.
Marcus pointed with a laser.
"Daniel Carter established eleven limited liability companies over the past three years."
Another screen appeared.
Each company held luxury apartments, investment accounts, expensive vehicles, or undeclared cryptocurrency wallets.
Jonathan remained silent.
Marcus continued.
"Nearly every asset was purchased using money transferred from joint marital accounts."
"So he stole from Emily."
"Yes."
"But that's only the beginning."
Another screen illuminated.
A timeline stretched across the wall.
Three years earlier.
Daniel met Vanessa.
Two years earlier.
He secretly opened offshore accounts.
Eighteen months earlier.
Emily increased her life insurance policy.
One year earlier.
Daniel became the sole beneficiary.
Nine months earlier.
He convinced Emily to update her will after learning she was pregnant.
Jonathan slowly raised his eyes.
"What did the new will say?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"If Emily died..."
"...everything transferred to Daniel."
No one in the room spoke.
Jonathan's voice became dangerously calm.
"The pregnancy?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Our investigators believe Daniel delayed filing for divorce until after confirming Emily's pregnancy."
"Why?"
"Because her life insurance increased significantly after she enrolled in additional family coverage."
Jonathan stared at the screen.
"So..."
"He stood to inherit nearly twelve million dollars immediately."
Marcus clicked once more.
One final document appeared.
An email.
Sent six weeks before the attack.
From Daniel to Vanessa.
The subject line read:
"Soon."
Jonathan read the message.
Once everything is finished, we'll finally have the life we deserve.
No more pretending.
Just be patient.
Jonathan slowly closed the file.
The room felt colder.
"This wasn't simply adultery."
"No."
"It wasn't merely fraud."
"No."
"It was preparation."
Marcus nodded grimly.
"Preparation for murder."
Across the city...
Detective Laura Bennett received another call from the digital forensics lab.
"We recovered deleted messages."
"Between Daniel and Vanessa?"
"Thousands."
"Anything significant?"
The technician sounded unusually tense.
"You should read this yourself."
Minutes later, the files arrived.
Message after message filled the screen.
Most discussed hidden bank accounts.
Secret meetings.
Lawyers.
Divorce strategies.
Then Detective Bennett reached a conversation dated five days before the incident.
Vanessa had written:
What if she refuses?
Daniel replied only three minutes later.
Then we'll make sure she never has another choice.
The detective's heartbeat quickened.
She continued reading.
Vanessa:
It has to look natural.
Daniel:
Leave that to me.
A final attachment appeared beneath the conversation.
It was a photograph.
The Grand Regent Hotel.
Specifically...
Its grand marble staircase.
Someone had circled the top landing with a red marker.
Underneath, Daniel had typed six chilling words.
One push changes everything forever.
Detective Bennett leaned back in disbelief.
The evidence no longer suggested conspiracy.
It proved premeditation.
She immediately reached for her phone.
"Judge, this is Detective Bennett."
She took a slow breath.
"I need arrest warrants."
"For both of them."
"And I believe..."
She glanced once more at the photograph of the staircase.
May you like
"...we're no longer investigating attempted murder."
"We're investigating an attempted execution."
