Chapter 1: The Man at the Bottom of the Stairs

The scream echoed through the marble atrium.

For one suspended heartbeat, every conversation in the luxurious Grand Regent Hotel died.

Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead as hundreds of guests turned toward the sweeping staircase.

A woman was falling.

She struck the first landing shoulder-first.

Then the second.

Her body rolled helplessly over polished marble, each impact drawing another horrified gasp from the crowd gathered below.

Finally...

Silence.

Emily Carter lay motionless at the bottom of the staircase, one trembling hand still wrapped protectively around the curve of her seven-month pregnant belly.

A thin streak of blood spread across the pristine white floor.

Someone screamed for an ambulance.

Someone else shouted for security.

Yet the one person who should have been running toward her remained frozen.

At the top of the staircase stood Daniel Carter.

Her husband.

The man who had promised to love her for the rest of their lives.

Instead, he stared down at her as though she were a complete stranger.

Beside him stood Vanessa Brooks.

Perfect makeup.

Designer dress.

Diamond earrings Daniel had secretly purchased only weeks before.

Vanessa's breathing was uneven, but she recovered quickly.

"Oh my God..." she whispered loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "She slipped."

Daniel swallowed.

He knew that wasn't true.

He had watched Vanessa place both hands against Emily's chest.

He had watched her shove.

He had done absolutely nothing.

Not one step.

Not one word.

Not one attempt to stop it.

Down below, the growing crowd suddenly parted.

A tall man in a charcoal-gray suit pushed through the terrified onlookers with surprising urgency.

His movements carried quiet authority.

People instinctively moved aside.

He dropped to one knee beside Emily.

"Ma'am..."

No response.

He gently checked her pulse.

Weak.

Far too weak.

Then his eyes fell upon her face.

Everything changed.

His composed expression disappeared.

Recognition flashed across his features.

"No..."

His voice barely escaped.

"It can't be..."

He carefully brushed several strands of hair away from Emily's face.

The silver necklace around her neck caught the light.

A small oval pendant.

Old.

Scratched.

Almost worthless.

Except to him.

His fingers trembled.

"I know this pendant."

He looked at Emily again.

Then at the tiny crescent-shaped birthmark just beneath her left ear.

His breathing stopped.

For twenty-eight years he had searched.

Twenty-eight years since a little girl vanished during a devastating shopping mall fire in Chicago.

Twenty-eight years since his younger sister disappeared without a trace.

Every private investigator had eventually reached the same conclusion.

She was dead.

He had never believed them.

And now...

The impossible lay bleeding before him.

"Emily..." he whispered, although he knew she could not hear him.

"It really is you."

Around them, confused whispers spread through the crowd.

"Does he know her?"

"Who is that man?"

"What happened?"

The stranger removed his expensive tailored jacket without hesitation.

He folded it carefully beneath Emily's head before placing one reassuring hand over hers.

"You'll be okay," he murmured.

"I promise."

Then he stood.

Slowly.

Purposefully.

His calm blue eyes lifted toward the top of the staircase.

Straight toward Daniel.

Their gazes met.

Daniel felt something he had not experienced in years.

Fear.

Not ordinary fear.

The kind that settles deep inside a person's bones.

The stranger climbed exactly three steps before stopping.

His voice remained remarkably calm.

"Tell me."

Daniel struggled to answer.

"What happened?"

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

The man never looked at her.

"I wasn't asking you."

Daniel forced himself to speak.

"She... she lost her balance."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It happened so fast."

The stranger's expression hardened.

"No."

"It didn't."

Security guards finally rushed into the lobby.

One approached cautiously.

"Sir, please step back."

Instead of arguing, the man reached into his jacket pocket and produced a black leather wallet.

He flipped it open.

The head of hotel security's face changed instantly.

"Mr. Hayes..."

The guard straightened.

"I—I didn't realize—"

The man closed the wallet.

"Secure this entire lobby."

"No one leaves."

Especially those two."

He nodded toward Daniel and Vanessa.

Daniel frowned.

"What gives you the authority—"

The security chief interrupted immediately.

"Sir..."

"You should cooperate."

Daniel stared in confusion.

"Who exactly is he?"

No one answered.

Outside, ambulance sirens grew louder.

Paramedics rushed inside carrying trauma equipment.

One knelt beside Emily.

"Seven months pregnant," another observed.

"We've got abdominal trauma."

"We're losing blood pressure."

The lead paramedic looked up.

"Was anyone with her?"

Daniel hesitated.

Before he could answer, the stranger spoke.

"I am."

"You family?"

A brief pause.

Then he answered quietly.

"I believe I am."

The words confused everyone.

Even Daniel.

Emily had once told him she had grown up in foster care.

No parents.

No siblings.

No relatives.

No one.

That had been one reason Daniel believed divorcing her would be simple.

She had nowhere to go.

No one powerful enough to stand beside her.

Apparently...

He had been terribly mistaken.

The paramedics carefully lifted Emily onto a stretcher.

As they prepared to move, one of them frowned.

"Wait."

He pointed toward Emily's hand.

Even unconscious...

She was gripping something.

Tightly.

The medic gently opened her fingers.

Inside lay a small white button.

It had been ripped from someone's designer blazer.

Vanessa instinctively glanced down.

Her expensive cream-colored blazer was missing exactly one button.

Her face lost all color.

No one else seemed to notice.

Except...

Mr. Hayes.

He quietly watched her.

He saw everything.

Without saying a word, he slipped on a pair of medical gloves handed to him by a paramedic.

He accepted the button.

Placed it carefully inside a sterile evidence bag.

Then looked directly at Vanessa.

"You should keep wearing that jacket."

Her lips trembled.

"W-what?"

"It won't match anymore."

She instinctively covered the missing button with her handbag.

Too late.

He had already seen.

So had one of the police officers arriving through the revolving doors.

Within minutes, officers began interviewing witnesses.

Guests who had been standing near the staircase started speaking one after another.

"I heard them arguing."

"The blonde woman was screaming."

"I saw someone raise her hands."

"I think she pushed her."

"I recorded part of it."

The final sentence froze Daniel's blood.

"You... what?"

A young woman slowly lifted her phone.

"I was filming the piano performance."

She swallowed.

"The staircase is in the background."

Daniel's heart hammered.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Do something."

"What?"

"I don't know!"

Across the lobby, Mr. Hayes quietly watched the exchange.

Then another hotel employee hurried toward him.

"Sir..."

"The general manager is asking if you'd like the executive conference room."

"No."

His eyes never left Daniel.

"I'll stay right here."

He reached into his pocket and removed an old photograph.

The edges were faded.

In the picture, a little girl with bright eyes smiled while holding the hand of a teenage boy.

Around the little girl's neck hung the same silver pendant Emily still wore today.

His thumb brushed across the photograph.

"I finally found you," he whispered.

"But someone tried to take you away from me."

His gaze slowly rose toward Daniel and Vanessa once more.

Neither of them realized that the quiet man standing across the lobby was not merely a witness.

He was Jonathan Hayes—the billionaire founder of Hayes Global Holdings, one of the most influential businessmen in America.

More importantly...

He was the brother Emily had been searching for her entire life.

And from this moment forward...

The people responsible for throwing his pregnant sister down those marble stairs would discover that they had not just attacked a helpless woman.

They had declared war on an empire.
