Chapter 6 – The Hidden Witness

The sun rose over Manhattan, but inside St. Augustine Medical Center, time had lost all meaning.

Marcus Thorne hadn't left the hospital in thirty-six hours.

His wife remained in the Intensive Care Unit.

His newborn daughter fought for every breath inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

And somewhere beyond the walls of the hospital...

Someone was still trying to erase the truth.

Detective Sarah Bennett stood before the temporary command center, studying the growing evidence board.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Employee files.

Hospital floor plans.

Bank transfers.

Each thread led to Isabella Rossi.

Yet each new discovery revealed another invisible hand pulling the strings behind her.

"This wasn't jealousy," Sarah said quietly.

"It was an operation."

Jonathan Caldwell nodded.

"And operations leave witnesses."

Three floors below...

Nurse Olivia Grant quietly cleaned out her locker.

Twenty-eight years old.

An oncology nurse.

She wasn't assigned to the VIP wing.

She had never spoken to Marcus Thorne.

And until yesterday...

No investigator even knew her name.

She folded her uniform into a small gym bag, trying to ignore the constant vibration of her phone.

Unknown number.

Again.

She declined the call.

Seconds later, another message appeared.

Forget what you saw.

Her hands froze.

Another text followed.

People who stay silent stay alive.

Olivia's breathing quickened.

She immediately deleted nothing.

Instead...

She walked straight toward the Major Crimes command center.

Forty minutes later...

Detective Bennett placed a digital recorder on the table.

Marcus.

Jonathan.

Robert Callahan.

FBI agent Ethan Brooks.

All watched quietly as Olivia sat across from them.

She looked exhausted.

"I didn't think it mattered."

Sarah spoke gently.

"Tell us everything."

Olivia swallowed.

"My shift ended around seven."

"I was walking past the VIP garden terrace."

Marcus frowned.

"The terrace behind Khloe's suite?"

Olivia nodded.

"I heard two women arguing."

She hesitated.

"I recognized Mrs. Thorne immediately."

Sarah leaned forward.

"And the other woman?"

"Isabella Rossi."

The room became silent.

Olivia slowly removed her phone from her handbag.

"I didn't mean to record them."

She unlocked the screen.

"I was sending a voice message to my sister."

"The argument started..."

"So I never stopped recording."

Marcus looked at the phone.

"You have the conversation?"

Olivia nodded nervously.

"Almost four minutes."

Sarah immediately handed the device to the digital forensics technician.

Within seconds...

The audio filled the room.

At first...

Only footsteps.

Then Isabella's unmistakable voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

"You really think a wedding ring makes you irreplaceable?"

Khloe answered quietly.

"I don't want to argue with you."

Isabella laughed.

"You won't have to."

Several seconds passed.

Then came the sentence that froze everyone in the room.

"By tomorrow, Marcus won't be looking at you anymore."

Silence.

Then another.

Even colder.

"Women lose babies every day."

Marcus's face drained of color.

Olivia continued listening, tears forming in her eyes.

Khloe's voice shook.

"What did you just say?"

Isabella answered calmly.

"Sometimes accidents solve impossible problems."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Sarah slowly looked toward Marcus.

"This wasn't spontaneous."

Jonathan nodded once.

"It was premeditated."

Before anyone could respond...

Chief Security Officer Robert Callahan received a radio call.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He grabbed his jacket.

"I'm on my way."

Marcus stood.

"What happened?"

Robert looked toward Sarah.

"Our maintenance supervisor found something."

Deep beneath the hospital...

Below the parking structure...

Beyond the boiler rooms...

The hospital's archive servers occupied a narrow concrete basement.

The air smelled of dust and machine oil.

Janitor Miguel Alvarez stood beside an old storage cabinet, visibly nervous.

"I wasn't looking for evidence."

He spoke softly.

"I was replacing ceiling panels."

Robert looked around.

"What did you find?"

Miguel pointed behind one of the server racks.

"There."

A portable hard drive.

Covered in dust.

Recently hidden.

Sarah carefully picked it up using evidence gloves.

"It wasn't here yesterday."

Miguel nodded.

"I clean this room every morning."

She looked toward the IT specialists.

"Check it."

Minutes later...

The drive connected to an isolated forensic workstation.

The first folder appeared.

SECURITY_BACKUP_TEMP

Another folder.

VIP_FLOOR_ARCHIVE

Another.

DELETE_AFTER_UPLOAD

Sarah's heartbeat quickened.

The technician opened the final directory.

Hundreds of security recordings appeared.

Deleted.

Recovered.

Every one marked for permanent destruction.

Robert stared at the screen.

"Someone copied the surveillance archive..."

"...before trying to erase it."

Jonathan quietly asked,

"Can we recover everything?"

The technician smiled for the first time all morning.

"They failed."

"Almost every file survived."

Marcus looked toward Sarah.

"So whoever's helping Isabella..."

"...wanted every camera angle gone."

Sarah nodded.

"But they underestimated hospital backup systems."

Miguel stood quietly near the doorway.

"I almost threw that drive into the trash."

Marcus walked over.

"You didn't."

Miguel shrugged.

"My wife always tells me..."

He smiled faintly.

"...people hide things where they think nobody important will ever look."

Jonathan extended his hand.

"Your wife is a wise woman."

Hours later...

The investigation took another unexpected turn.

FBI Financial Crimes Specialist Ethan Brooks entered carrying a thick corporate file.

"I think we found the connection."

Marcus looked up.

"What connection?"

Ethan placed several documents across the table.

"They're not just attacking your family."

"They've been attacking your company."

Marcus frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan highlighted a series of financial transfers.

Six months earlier...

Thorne Global Holdings had quietly lost three major international contracts.

Marcus remembered each one.

Construction.

Medical technology.

Renewable energy.

He had blamed market competition.

Now...

The truth looked very different.

"Each failed contract..."

Ethan explained,

"...was awarded to companies secretly financed through shell corporations."

Jonathan examined the documents.

"Owned by Isabella?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

He tapped another name.

Redwood Strategic Consulting.

The same mysterious company from the financial investigation.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"The contract."

Ethan nodded.

"The same organization paying hospital employees..."

"...was also sabotaging your corporation."

Sarah crossed her arms.

"So the attack on Khloe..."

"...was only one part of a much larger plan."

The room fell silent.

Ethan opened another file.

"This gets worse."

Several internal emails from Thorne Global appeared on the screen.

Confidential merger negotiations.

Executive schedules.

Private board meetings.

Information that should never have left the company.

Marcus immediately recognized them.

"Only senior executives could access these."

Ethan nodded.

"Exactly."

He looked directly at Marcus.

"You have a leak inside your own corporation."

Marcus slowly sat down.

For years...

He had believed the greatest threats to his empire came from competitors.

He had been wrong.

The enemy had been inside his walls all along.

That evening...

Marcus finally entered the NICU for the first time.

After hours of sterilization procedures, he stood beside his daughter's incubator.

She weighed barely three pounds.

Tiny fingers curled instinctively around nothing.

Machines breathed with her.

He gently placed one finger inside the incubator.

To his surprise...

Her tiny hand wrapped around it.

Not tightly.

Just enough.

Marcus smiled through tears.

"You already know how to fight."

Behind him, Jonathan quietly entered.

"You needed this."

Marcus nodded.

"I almost lost everything because I trusted the wrong people."

Jonathan looked at the sleeping infant.

"No."

"You almost lost everything because someone spent years building a conspiracy."

Marcus looked down at his daughter.

"They won't touch my family again."

At that exact moment...

Detective Bennett's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression hardened immediately.

"What?"

The room fell silent.

She slowly lowered the phone.

"The hospital just reported another break-in."

Marcus stood.

"What did they take?"

Sarah looked directly at him.

"Nothing."

Marcus frowned.

"Then why break in?"

Sarah's voice dropped.

"They weren't trying to steal evidence."

She paused.

"They were trying to find the nurse who made the recording."

Across the room...

Nurse Olivia Grant felt every drop of blood leave her face.

May you like

Because whoever had orchestrated the attack on Khloe...

Now knew there was a witness still alive.
