Chapter 4 – The Truth Finally Comes Out

Moving day arrived three days later.

Boxes lined the hallway.

As his wife packed baby clothes into a small cardboard box, his father quietly approached.

"I owe you both an apology."

The old man looked years older than before.

"I saw everything."

His voice cracked.

"And I kept choosing silence."

He handed his son a small envelope.

Inside was a check.

"It's not charity," he said.

"It's what I should have done long ago."

Before anyone could respond, his mother stormed into the room.

"So now you're taking their side?"

His father stood taller than he had in years.

"No."

"I'm finally standing on the right side."

She stared at him in disbelief.

Thirty-five years of marriage had never prepared her for hearing him disagree.

Without another word, he picked up one of the moving boxes himself.

For the first time, his wife smiled without forcing it.
