Chapter 4 — Everything Money Couldn't Buy

Three months later...

Julian rented a modest apartment on the edge of the city.

His phone barely rang anymore.

The investors disappeared.

The invitations stopped.

Even Cynthia left.

She moved in with a wealthy real estate developer before the divorce was finalized.

To her...

Julian had become yesterday's headline.

One rainy afternoon, he stood outside a neighborhood café.

Across the street, he saw Evelyn.

She was laughing.

Not politely.

Not out of obligation.

Genuinely.

Across the table sat an elderly couple holding hands.

Employees greeted her by name.

Children waved as she passed.

She looked...

Free.

For the first time since he'd known her.

Julian crossed the street.

"Evelyn."

She turned.

There was no anger in her eyes.

Only peace.

"I made a terrible mistake."

"I know."

"I was arrogant."

"I know."

"I thought money made me powerful."

She smiled gently.

"It often convinces people it does."

He swallowed hard.

"Can we start over?"

She considered him for a long moment.

Then shook her head.

"I already did."

He looked confused.

"My new life started the day I stopped trying to save our old one."

A black luxury sedan pulled to the curb.

The driver stepped out.

"Ms. Vance, your flight is ready."

She nodded.

Then looked back at Julian one last time.

"I don't hate you."

"I simply no longer belong to the chapter where you existed."

She entered the car.

It pulled away without looking back.

Julian remained standing in the rain.

For the first time in his life...

He understood the difference between losing money...

...and losing the person who believed in him before he had any.

Sometimes the greatest fortune isn't the empire you build.

It's the heart that quietly stands beside you while you build it.

May you like

And once that heart walks away...

No amount of wealth can buy it back.
