Chapter 3 — The Truth Behind the Empire

The next morning, headlines exploded across every financial news outlet.

VANCE GROUP CEO FACES SURPRISE DIVORCE.

Julian ignored them.

He had something more important.

His board meeting.

At precisely nine o'clock, he entered the executive conference room expecting applause.

Instead...

He found twelve directors sitting in complete silence.

At the far end of the table sat Evelyn.

She wore a tailored charcoal business suit.

No evening gown.

No diamonds.

Just quiet authority.

Julian stopped walking.

"What are you doing here?"

The chairman cleared his throat.

"I believe that's our question."

Julian frowned.

"This meeting is for executives only."

"It is," replied the chairman.

"Which is why Mrs. Vance is here."

Julian laughed.

"My wife doesn't work for this company."

Evelyn calmly slid a thick folder across the polished table.

"Ex-wife."

He opened it.

His smile vanished.

Share certificates.

Voting agreements.

Trust documents.

Page after page.

The numbers made no sense.

Until they did.

Fifty-one percent.

Julian's breathing slowed.

"No..."

The chairman folded his hands.

"Mrs. Vance has quietly controlled the majority voting shares for nearly seven years."

Every director nodded.

"You've never owned this company."

Julian looked at Evelyn.

"You lied to me."

She shook her head.

"No."

"My father founded this company."

"My grandfather placed the controlling shares into a family trust."

"You simply never asked whose name was actually on the documents."

His face turned pale.

"I built this business."

"You managed it."

She corrected him gently.

"There is a difference."

Security officers appeared outside the conference room.

The chairman spoke one final sentence.

"The board has voted."

"You are removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

Julian stared at Evelyn in disbelief.

"You planned all this."

"No."

She stood.

"You planned it."

"You just never imagined I was paying attention."

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, she added,

"The penthouse isn't yours either."

May you like

"It's company property."

"You have twenty-four hours to leave."
