Chapter 2 â The Man Santiago Never Saw Coming

Chapter 2 â The Man Santiago Never Saw Coming
The silence lasted only a heartbeat.
Then Santiago straightened his jacket.
His confidence returned with practiced ease.
"I don't know who you think you are," he said coldly.
"But you're trespassing."
The older man didn't answer.
He simply looked at me.
For one impossible moment...
I was no longer twenty-eight years old.
I was eight again.
Standing outside my father's study after scraping my knee.
Waiting for him to tell me everything would be all right.
His eyes softened.
"Come here, sweetheart."
My throat closed.
I hadn't heard those words in over two years.
Slowly...
Carefully...
I pushed myself to my feet.
Every movement hurt.
The baby shifted inside me.
Ricardo Salazar reached me before anyone else could.
He placed one steady hand against my shoulder.
The other rested gently over my stomach.
"My grandson?"
"I think he's frightened," I whispered.
"So am I."
"You don't have to be anymore."
For the first time since my wedding...
I believed him.
Behind us, Beatriz finally spoke.
"Security."
No one moved.
She frowned.
"I said remove them."
Still...
No one moved.
The head of Santiago's security detail stepped forward.
Then stopped.
He looked directly at Ricardo.
"Mr. Salazar."
His voice carried unmistakable respect.
"We were instructed this morning to cooperate with your legal team."
Santiago stared.
"What?"
The guard swallowed.
"The court order arrived an hour ago."
Ricardo looked at Santiago for the first time.
"I had hoped my daughter was exaggerating."
His eyes drifted across the bruises darkening my wrist.
"I was wrong."
Santiago recovered quickly.
"This is between my wife and me."
"No."
Ricardo's voice remained calm.
"This became criminal the moment you threatened her life."
He nodded toward the antique clock.
"My attorneys have already secured the recordings."
Santiago froze.
"What recordings?"
"The ones you've been making for weeks without realizing."
The color drained from Beatriz's face.
She looked toward the silver clock.
It sat quietly on the fireplace.
Exactly where it had always been.
Exactly where no one had ever questioned it.
Ricardo smiled.
"You should have paid more attention to your antiques."
Three attorneys entered the mansion.
Behind them came two prosecutors.
And finally...
Federal investigators.
They spread through the house with quiet efficiency.
One presented Santiago with a warrant.
Another disconnected computers.
A third photographed every room.
"What is this?" Santiago demanded.
"A search warrant."
"For evidence of financial fraud..."
The investigator glanced toward me.
"...domestic violence..."
"...forgery..."
"...and conspiracy."
Beatriz laughed nervously.
"This is absurd."
"It would be."
The investigator opened a leather folder.
"If these signatures belonged to someone else."
He placed the forged psychiatric reports onto the marble table.
Every page bore Beatriz's signature.
Every page had already been verified.
She stopped smiling.
Then another investigator appeared carrying a locked safe.
"We found this hidden behind the office wall."
Santiago lunged forward.
"No!"
Too late.
The safe opened.
Inside rested passports.
Cash.
Offshore banking records.
And dozens of files.
Every woman's name had been highlighted.
Every one had married into money.
Every one had disappeared after signing over assets.
My blood ran cold.
"I wasn't the first."
Ricardo answered quietly.
"No."
"You were simply the first who survived long enough to expose them."
Outside...
Police lights painted the mansion in flashing red and blue.
May you like
The empire had begun to collapse.
And it was only the beginning.
