Chapter 3 — Justice at Last

Chapter 3 — Justice at Last

Six months later.

The courtroom overflowed.

Reporters lined every bench.

Everyone wanted to hear the verdict.

Evan still insisted he loved his wife.

Still claimed everything had been a misunderstanding.

But facts don't mourn.

Facts don't lie.

The mechanic was found alive.

He testified under oath.

Evan had offered him fifty thousand dollars.

"Just make sure the brakes fail after a few days," he had said.

"There can't be witnesses."

Celeste also took the stand.

She had accepted immunity in exchange for the truth.

Between tears she admitted everything.

The affair.

The insurance scheme.

The plan to inherit Emma's estate.

She never believed Evan intended to kill Emma.

Until the crash actually happened.

When the jury returned...

It took less than two hours.

"Guilty."

First-degree murder.

Conspiracy.

Insurance fraud.

Multiple financial crimes.

The judge sentenced Evan to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

As deputies led him away, he looked toward me.

For the first time since Emma died...

He cried.

Real tears.

Not for Emma.

Not for the baby.

For himself.

I felt nothing.

Weeks later, I returned to Emma's grave carrying a small bouquet of white lilies.

The morning sun warmed the stone.

I knelt and gently brushed away fallen leaves.

"I kept my promise," I whispered.

"They know the truth now."

A soft breeze moved through the cemetery.

For the first time in many months...

The silence no longer felt empty.

It felt peaceful.

Emma's name would never again be remembered as a victim.

She would be remembered as a mother who protected her unborn child until her very last breath...

...and as the woman whose courage exposed the people who believed they had buried the truth with her.

But the truth has a way of rising.

Just like love.

May you like

Just like justice.

The End.
