Chapter 2 — The Truth Buried With Emma

Chapter 2 — The Truth Buried With Emma

After the funeral ended, most guests remained outside the cemetery.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Nobody could stop talking.

But Mr. Halden quietly approached me.

"There is one more instruction."

He handed me a small silver key.

"What is this?"

"Emma rented a private safety deposit box."

"She told me only you could open it."

The next morning, I unlocked the box.

Inside sat a leather journal.

A flash drive.

And one sealed envelope marked:

For Mom—Only if I'm gone.

I opened it carefully.

Emma's handwriting was steady.

Mom... I don't think my death will be an accident.

The room spun.

She continued.

Someone has been following me.

My brakes failed once.

The nursery security camera was disconnected.

Evan keeps asking about my life insurance.

Tears blurred the page.

Then I inserted the flash drive into my laptop.

Security footage appeared.

Emma leaving her doctor's office.

A black SUV following behind.

Another clip.

The underground parking garage.

Evan arguing with a mechanic.

Cash exchanged hands.

Date stamped.

Only two days before Emma's fatal crash.

My hands shook so violently I nearly dropped the computer.

Someone knocked.

It was Detective Harris.

"We reopened the investigation."

"What changed?"

He looked directly at me.

"The mechanic disappeared yesterday."

"And before he vanished..."

"He confessed someone paid him to tamper with Emma's brakes."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

May you like

The detective answered quietly.

"We have reason to believe it was Evan."
