Chapter 2: The Briefcase Nobody Expected

Chapter 2: The Briefcase Nobody Expected
The silence inside the ballroom stretched so long that even the string quartet stopped playing.
Every pair of eyes followed the elderly attorney as he crossed the marble floor with slow, deliberate steps.
Daniel Carter recovered first.
He laughed.
"Emma, is this another one of your pathetic attempts to embarrass me?"
Emma didn't answer.
She simply looked at Jonathan Reed.
The attorney stopped beside her, removed a pair of reading glasses from his pocket, and placed the worn leather briefcase gently on the table where her wedding ring rested.
"Mrs. Emma Carter," he said calmly. "I apologize for arriving a few minutes later than planned."
Daniel rolled his eyes.
"What is this? A divorce lawyer?"
Jonathan ignored him.
Instead, he slid a thick cream-colored envelope across the table.
Emma didn't open it.
She already knew what was inside.
Jonathan turned toward the guests.
"My name is Jonathan Reed."
"I have represented the Whitmore family for forty-three years."
Several guests exchanged confused looks.
Whitmore.
The name carried enormous weight.
The Whitmore Foundation owned hospitals, technology companies, commercial real estate, and investment firms across three continents.
Daniel frowned.
"What does that have to do with my wife?"
Jonathan finally looked directly at him.
"Everything."
The room became completely still.
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were legal files, notarized contracts, several USB drives, and a thick stack of sealed evidence envelopes.
"Mrs. Carter instructed me six months ago," Jonathan continued, "to release these documents only if she voluntarily removed her wedding ring in front of witnesses."
Daniel laughed again.
"You're serious?"
Jonathan nodded once.
"Very."
One guest quietly started recording with a phone.
Another quickly lowered it after Jonathan spoke again.
"This entire ballroom is already under legal preservation. Every security camera recording has been secured."
Daniel's smile weakened.
Jonathan placed the first document on the table.
"Petition for divorce."
Then another.
"Corporate fraud investigation."
Then another.
"Financial concealment."
Daniel's face lost color.
Emma remained perfectly calm.
For the first time that evening...

She wasn't the one everyone was staring at.
Daniel was.
