Chapter 2 — The Cameras Saw Everything

Within an hour, detectives arrived.
Every surveillance server was removed under police supervision.
The museum contained more than three hundred cameras.
Hallways.
Galleries.
Private elevators.
Loading docks.
Even hidden security angles built into the display cases.
Grant's assault appeared from eleven different viewpoints.
His insults were captured by directional microphones.
His hand striking Mara's face.
His body slamming her into the marble pillar.
His friends laughing.
The guests turning away.
Everything.
Then investigators discovered something even worse.
Twenty-three minutes before the assault...
Grant had entered a restricted conservation vault.
He wasn't alone.
A museum curator accompanied him.
Minutes later, one of the world's rarest Byzantine crowns disappeared from its secured display.
The assault...
Had never been the real reason Grant confronted Mara.
It had been a distraction.
He wanted every camera focused on the argument...
Instead of the theft happening elsewhere.
But he had forgotten one thing.
Lockdown preserved everything.
Including every stolen artifact.
Security officers searched the building.
Inside a decorative shipping crate marked "Restoration Materials"...
They found the missing crown.
Along with forged export documents.
