Chapter 3: The Moment the Family Fell Apart

Chapter 3: The Moment the Family Fell Apart

Daniel pressed play again.

The video resumed.

There was no audio.

It didn't need any.

Everyone watched Preston accuse an innocent child.

Everyone watched Sophie cry.

Everyone watched me step between them.

Then...

The footage captured Preston storming toward the entrance.

His hands wrapped around the heavy oak menu board.

He lifted it.

Raised it above his shoulder.

And swung.

The board smashed directly into Sophie's head.

Frame by frame.

There was no accident.

No slipping.

No falling object.

Only deliberate violence.

The security office fell silent.

Even the officers looked stunned.

One detective quietly whispered,

"My God..."

The video kept rolling.

Blood appeared almost instantly.

Sophie collapsed.

Instead of helping...

Preston pointed at her.

Still shouting.

Still accusing.

Then came something I hadn't noticed before.

Camera Four.

A wide angle from behind the dance floor.

It showed my parents.

Perfectly.

My mother saw the entire attack.

She didn't move.

My father watched Sophie fall.

He calmly picked up his champagne glass.

Neither one took a single step toward their granddaughter.

Neither one checked whether she was breathing.

The detective stopped the video.

He looked directly at my parents.

"Did either of you attempt to help the injured child?"

Neither answered.

Instead...

My mother whispered,

"We didn't think..."

She couldn't finish.

The words died in her throat.

Another officer approached Preston.

"Sir..."

"Turn around."

The handcuffs clicked.

For the first time in his life...

Nobody rescued him.

Preston struggled.

"This is ridiculous!"

"My father knows people!"

"My lawyer will destroy this!"

The detective didn't even blink.

"You assaulted a minor."

"You filed a false theft accusation."

"And you attempted to fabricate evidence."

"You can explain the rest downtown."

As officers led him away...

He looked at my parents.

Waiting.

Expecting.

Begging them to stop this.

They stood frozen.

For once...

Their influence meant nothing.

As the elevator doors closed...

Preston screamed my name.

"Evelyn!"

"This is your fault!"

I simply held Sophie's hand.

May you like

"No."

"This is yours."
