Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected

Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sophie never let go of my hand.

The paramedic pressed fresh gauze against the wound above her ear while another checked her pupils with a flashlight.

"Stay with me, sweetheart."

"I'm here."

She looked up at me through tears.

"I didn't steal it, Mommy."

"I know."

"You never have to prove that to me."

Behind us, the ballroom doors burst open.

Preston was shouting.

"She's running away because she's guilty!"

My mother hurried after him.

"Officer, don't let her leave!"

My father followed more slowly, his face cold with disappointment.

"They're trying to escape before this becomes official."

One police officer looked at Sophie's blood-soaked dress.

Another looked at the fresh dent in the heavy oak menu board lying near the ballroom entrance.

"Who threw this?"

Nobody answered.

Preston stepped forward confidently.

"She attacked me first."

He pointed toward Sophie.

"The girl became violent after I caught her stealing."

The younger officer frowned.

"An eight-year-old attacked a grown man?"

Preston didn't hesitate.

"She hit me."

"That board accidentally fell."

The lie sounded ridiculous.

But my parents nodded.

"So did we," my mother added.

Several relatives reluctantly agreed.

Not because they had seen it.

Because they always stood with Preston.

The officer turned toward me.

"Ma'am?"

Before I could answer...

A calm voice interrupted everyone.

"Actually..."

"I think our cameras saw something different."

Every head turned.

A man wearing a dark hotel security uniform walked across the marble lobby.

His name tag read:

Daniel Brooks.

In one hand, he carried a tablet.

In the other...

A small external hard drive.

"The ballroom has six synchronized security cameras," he explained.

"They record continuously."

Preston's confident smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

"We received instructions from management to preserve all footage after reports that a child had been injured."

Silence.

The police officer extended his hand.

"I'll need to see it."

Preston stepped forward.

"Those cameras don't record audio."

Daniel nodded.

"They don't."

"But they record everything else."

...

Ten minutes later...

Everyone stood inside the hotel's security office.

The recording began.

Camera One.

The ballroom.

Guests laughing.

Music playing.

Sophie sitting quietly beside me coloring on a folded napkin.

She never left her chair.

Camera Two.

The head table.

Preston stood beside his best man.

His phone rested on the table.

Then...

He casually slipped it into his jacket.

Nobody noticed.

Not even me.

The footage continued.

Minutes later...

Preston walked alone toward our table.

He looked over both shoulders.

Reached into Sophie's denim jacket.

Placed something inside the pocket.

Then calmly walked away.

Exactly thirty seconds later...

He grabbed the microphone.

"My phone is missing."

The room inside the security office became perfectly still.

The officer paused the video.

Turned slowly toward Preston.

"Would you like to explain why you put your phone inside your niece's jacket?"

Nobody spoke.

My mother stared at the frozen image.

My father's face drained of color.

Preston swallowed.

"It's..."

"That's not what it looks like."

The officer looked back at the screen.

"It looks exactly like that."

May you like

But the recording wasn't over.

Not even close.
