Chapter 3 – The Truth Everyone Refused to See

Chapter 3 – The Truth Everyone Refused to See
The hotel's security office was quiet.
One large monitor.
One keyboard.
One truth waiting to be uncovered.
Everyone gathered behind the screen.
The officers.
The hotel manager.
Our parents.
Preston.
His new wife.
Dozens of wedding guests.
The footage began.
There was Sophie sitting beside me.
Swinging her feet.
Eating cake.
Laughing quietly.
Exactly as I remembered.
Then Preston entered the frame.
He looked around carefully.
Making sure no one was watching.
Except the camera.
He picked up Sophie's denim jacket.
Slipped his hand into his own pocket.
Pulled out the missing phone.
Placed it inside her jacket.
Then calmly walked away.
The room fell silent.
Someone gasped.
Another guest whispered,
"My God..."
The recording continued.
Minutes later...
Preston dramatically announced the missing phone.
Walked directly to Sophie.
Reached into the jacket.
Pulled out the phone exactly where he had hidden it.
Every second had been recorded.
Every lie.
Every step.
Every calculated move.
Then came the final video.
Preston tearing the heavy oak menu board from its stand.
Swinging it with both hands.
Striking an eight-year-old child.
No one spoke.
My mother stared at the floor.
My father's shoulders sagged.
Neither could deny what they had seen.
One police officer paused the video.
He turned toward Preston.
"Would you like to explain this?"
Preston opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
His bride slowly removed her wedding ring.
She looked at him as though she had never known him.
Then she placed the ring on the security desk.
Without saying a word...
She walked away.
She never came back.
One officer stepped forward.
"Preston Collins..."
"You're under arrest."
The handcuffs clicked shut.
May you like
For the first time in his life...
No one rescued him.
