Chapter 2 – The Camera Never Lies

Chapter 2 – The Camera Never Lies
Preston's face drained of color.
"What did you say?"
I didn't answer.
The sound of approaching sirens echoed outside the hotel as Sophie buried her face against my shoulder.
Blood still trickled down her temple.
Only then did several guests finally step forward.
Not because they cared.
Because they realized this had gone too far.
A young waitress handed me a clean towel.
A middle-aged man removed his suit jacket and placed it around Sophie's shoulders.
The ballroom, once filled with whispers condemning my daughter, had fallen into uneasy silence.
Hotel security rushed through the doors.
Behind them came the general manager.
He looked at the shattered menu board.
At Sophie.
At the blood covering the marble floor.
"What happened here?"
Before anyone else could speak, Preston stepped forward.
"That child attacked me."
His voice was calm again.
Practiced.
"She stole my phone. She became violent when I confronted her."
My mother nodded immediately.
"I saw everything."
"So did I," my father added.
For a brief moment, I almost doubted myself.
Then the security manager glanced toward the ceiling.
His eyes landed on the black dome camera hanging above the ballroom entrance.
"I believe the cameras saw everything too."
Preston stopped breathing.
The manager spoke into his radio.
"Lock the footage."
"No one deletes anything."
The words hit Preston harder than any accusation.
He forced a smile.
"Surely we don't need all that."
The manager ignored him.
Within minutes, two police officers entered the ballroom.
An ambulance crew followed.
One paramedic gently examined Sophie.
"She'll need stitches."
My daughter looked at me with frightened eyes.
"Mommy..."
"Am I in trouble?"
I kissed her forehead.
"No, sweetheart."
"You didn't do anything wrong."
For the first time that evening...
Someone believed her.
Me.
May you like
And soon...
The camera would too.
