CHAPTER 1: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SILENCE

The next morning, Lena woke up to the sound of rain tapping against the bedroom window.

For a few seconds, she forgot everything that had happened.

Then she looked down.

Oliver was sleeping peacefully beside her, his fever finally broken.

Mason sat in the chair next to the bed, still wearing yesterday’s clothes.

He hadn’t slept.

Not even for a minute.

His hand rested gently on Oliver’s back, as if he was afraid that if he looked away, his son would disappear.

Lena watched him quietly.

“Mason…”

His eyes immediately lifted.

“You’re awake.”

She nodded.

“You should sleep.”

A faint, tired smile appeared on his face.

“I will.”

But they both knew he was lying.

Lena looked away.

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then she whispered the words she had been holding inside for weeks.

“I’m sorry.”

Mason’s expression changed.

“Sorry for what?”

“For everything.”

Her voice cracked.

“For letting it get this bad.”

Mason moved closer.

“Lena, look at me.”

She hesitated.

“None of this was your fault.”

“But I should have told you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I should have told you your mother and Brianna weren’t helping. I should have told you they were making me cook, clean, and take care of Oliver while they sat downstairs.”

Mason froze.

“What?”

Lena closed her eyes.

The truth she had hidden for so long finally came out.

“They told me you were under too much pressure at work.”

“They said you needed peace.”

“They said if I complained, I would only create problems between you and your family.”

Mason’s jaw tightened.

“And you believed them?”

Lena looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I believed you loved your family enough that you would never believe me over them.”

Those words hurt more than any accusation.

Because Mason knew exactly what she meant.

He had spent years believing his mother’s sacrifices.

Believing her stories.

Believing that Patricia was simply difficult because she cared too much.

But now he saw the truth.

She wasn’t protecting the family.

She was controlling it.

A knock suddenly came from downstairs.

Mason’s expression turned cold.

“I’ll handle this.”

When he walked into the living room, Patricia was already standing there.

She looked completely different from the woman who had been thrown out the night before.

Her eyes were filled with anger.

“You embarrassed me.”

Mason stared at her.

“You endangered my wife and my son.”

“I helped raise you.”

“And I respected you.”

His voice hardened.

“But respect is not permission to hurt the people I love.”

Patricia stepped closer.

“You’re choosing them over your own mother?”

Mason didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

The answer shocked her.

Because for the first time in her life…

She realized she no longer had control over him.

“I gave you everything,” she whispered.

“No.”

Mason looked directly into her eyes.

“You gave me expectations.”

Then he opened the door.

“And I spent my entire life trying to earn your approval.”

A pause.

“I’m done.”

Patricia left without another word.

But Mason didn’t know…

That was only the beginning.

Because before she walked away, Patricia had made one phone call.

And the person on the other end was someone who could destroy everything Mason had built.
