One year later.

Lily took her first steps across the living room.

Daniel and Emily laughed as she stumbled into her father's arms.

The little house echoed with warmth.

Not because it was perfect.

Because it was safe.

Daniel's parents visited often now.

His mother never arrived empty-handed.

She cooked.

She cleaned up after herself.

And whenever Emily stood to help, she smiled.

One evening, Daniel stood on the back porch watching the sunset.

He looked through the window.

His daughter was giggling while her grandparents built towers from wooden blocks.

His wife was smiling without forcing it.

His home was filled with peace instead of tension.

He shook his head.

"Not for a single second."

Because that night, when he walked through the door and found his pregnant wife crying alone over a sink full of dishes, he thought he was protecting her.
