Chapter 1: He Walked Into the Kitchen—and What He Saw Ended Years of Silence

Silence settled over the house.

His mother looked up first.

"Oh," she said casually. "You're finally home."

No one noticed the way Daniel's jaw tightened.

No one except his wife.

Emily quickly wiped her face with the back of her hand.

"I'm almost done," she whispered.

Daniel walked toward the sink without taking his eyes off the people in the living room.

"Who made all these dishes?"

No answer.

His younger cousin shrugged.

"We all ate."

Daniel nodded once.

"And who decided my pregnant wife should clean up after everyone?"

His mother's expression hardened.

"Don't start."

"I'm asking a simple question."

His sister rolled her eyes.

"Emily offered."

Daniel looked at Emily.

She lowered her head.

"I... didn't exactly offer."

His mother stood.

"She's part of this family. Helping around the house won't hurt her."

Daniel laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

"My wife is eight months pregnant."

"So?"

"So she shouldn't be standing for hours cleaning after seven healthy adults."

His mother crossed her arms.

"Back in my day, women worked until the day they gave birth."

Daniel stepped closer.

"And back in your day, husbands were expected to protect their wives."

The room fell silent.

He reached over Emily's shoulder and gently took the sponge from her hands.

"Go upstairs."

"But the dishes—"

"I said go upstairs."

She hesitated.

He smiled softly.

"I'll be there in a minute."

Emily nodded and slowly disappeared up the stairs.

Daniel rolled up his sleeves.

Then he unplugged the sink.

Greasy water rushed away.

He turned around.

"The people who made the mess can clean it."

His mother stared at him.

"You're choosing her over your own family?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

May you like

"No."

"I'm choosing what's right."
