Chapter 12 — The Original Archive

The old Morris Medical Center stood beneath a gray sky.
Its windows were boarded.
Its walls were covered with years of rain and neglect.
But Matthew knew exactly where the entrance was.
He stopped beside a rusted side door.
“This is where Diane kept the original records.”
Emma looked at him.
“You said the archive was destroyed.”
“I said Diane wanted everyone to believe it was destroyed.”
Michael pushed the door open.
The smell of dust and mold rushed out.
Sophie stayed close to Matthew.
For the first time since Emma had met her, Sophie looked less like Diane's weapon.
She looked like a daughter.
A frightened daughter.
They descended a narrow staircase.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Matthew entered a code.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Emma froze.
Rows of shelves filled the room.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Decades of secrets.
Michael whispered, “How many people did she destroy?”
Matthew looked around.
“Enough to build an empire.”
Emma stepped toward the nearest shelf.
Names were written on the boxes.
Some had dates.
Some had only initials.
Then she saw one.
EMMA MORRIS — ORIGINAL IDENTITY
Her heart stopped.
She pulled it down.
Inside was her original birth certificate.
Not the one Diane had forged.
The real one.
Mother:
CLARA MORRIS.
Father:
UNKNOWN — SEALED BY COURT ORDER.
Emma stared at the page.
“Why was my father sealed?”
Matthew looked uncomfortable.
Clara had never told her.
Emma turned.
“You knew?”
Matthew shook his head.
“Not everything.”
Emma opened another envelope.
Inside was a letter from David.
It was dated twenty-seven years earlier.
Emma unfolded it.
“Clara, if Diane discovers the child's identity, she will use the Morris clause to control her.”
Emma's breathing became shallow.
Another line followed.
“The child must disappear from every Bennett record.”
Emma looked at Matthew.
“David helped hide me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he let me grow up believing someone else was my mother?”
“Because Diane was watching.”
Emma closed her eyes.
The betrayal suddenly felt different.
Her childhood had not been abandoned.
It had been concealed.
To save her.
She continued reading.
“When the time comes, the truth must be returned to Emma. Not through Diane. Never through Diane.”
A second document was attached.
It was a legal agreement.
Emma read the first paragraph.
Then stopped.
“Michael.”
He stepped beside her.
She handed it to him.
His eyes moved across the page.
His expression changed.
“This says I'm not a Bennett.”
Matthew nodded.
“Biologically, you're a Morris.”
Michael stared at the document.
“But David…”
“David was your father.”
Michael looked up.
“Then why does this matter?”
Emma answered softly.
“Because Diane used the Bennett name to make you believe you had no claim to the Morris trust.”
Michael went silent.
Then another sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
Matthew raised one hand.
Nobody moved.
The footsteps stopped outside the archive.
A metallic click followed.
The door handle turned.
Matthew pulled Sophie behind him.
Michael stepped in front of Emma.
The door opened.
Detective Sarah Bennett stood there.
“Don't shoot.”
Matthew lowered his weapon.
“How did you find us?”
Sarah held up a folder.
“Diane's lawyer gave me the location.”
Emma frowned.
“Diane's lawyer?”
Sarah nodded.
“She wants a deal.”
Matthew laughed bitterly.
“Diane doesn't make deals.”
“She does when she's afraid.”
Sarah opened the folder.
Inside was a bank statement.
Emma stared.
“That's the foundation's emergency account.”
Sarah nodded.
“Three hundred and eighty million dollars.”
Michael looked shocked.
“Where did she move it?”
Sarah turned the page.
“The money wasn't moved.”
“It was withdrawn.”
Emma frowned.
“By whom?”
Sarah pointed to the signature.
Emma read it.
Then her face went cold.
SOPHIE MORRIS.
Sophie stepped forward.
“That isn't my signature.”
“I know.”
Sarah handed her another document.
“This one is worse.”
Sophie read it.
Her face drained of color.
“What?”
Emma took it.
A trust amendment.
Dated ten months earlier.
One week before Lily's birth.
The amendment named Sophie as the future controlling beneficiary of the Morris trust.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
WHEN THE BABY IS BORN, REMOVE EMMA.
Emma's eyes lifted.
“She planned everything before Lily was even born.”
Matthew looked toward Sophie.
“She knew you would be blamed.”
Sophie whispered:
“She needed me to look guilty.”
A sudden alarm sounded.
Everyone turned.
Smoke began pouring beneath the archive door.
Matthew shouted.
“She's burning it!”
Michael grabbed Emma.
“Move!”
They rushed toward the exit.
Flames appeared in the hallway.
Boxes began catching fire.
Years of evidence were disappearing.
Emma ran back.
“Emma!”
She ignored Michael.
One box remained untouched.
She grabbed it.
The label was almost burned away.
But she could still read the last word.
DANIEL.
Matthew saw it.
“Take it!”
They escaped through a side passage.
Seconds later, the archive erupted behind them.
Emma collapsed against the wall, clutching the box.
Smoke filled the night.
Michael knelt beside her.
“Are you hurt?”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the box.
“This is what she didn't want us to find.”
Matthew opened it.
Inside was a single black ledger.
And a photograph.
Daniel Morris stood in the center.
Beside him were David.
Clara.
Diane.
Matthew.
And a much younger man.
Michael stared at him.
“Who is that?”
Matthew's face changed.
“That…”
He picked up the photograph.
“That is the man Diane told everyone never existed.”
Emma looked closer.
The stranger had the same eyes as Michael.
The same jawline.
The same distinctive scar near the eyebrow.
Michael whispered:
“Who is he?”
May you like
Matthew looked at Emma.
“Your biological father.”
