Chapter 11 — The Woman Who Owned Nothing

Diane's arrest had made the news.
But only for twenty-four hours.
By the second day, the headlines had changed.
The Bennett Foundation released a statement.
Diane Bennett had been suffering from severe emotional distress.
Her actions at the balcony were described as an isolated incident.
A family tragedy.
Nothing more.
Emma read the statement twice.
Then she laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because she finally understood.
Diane still had people protecting her.
Lawyers.
Executives.
Doctors.
Politicians.
People who owed their careers to the Bennett Foundation.
Michael stood beside her.
“She wants everyone to think she's unstable.”
Emma folded the statement.
“No.”
“She wants them to think she's harmless.”
Matthew sat across from them.
“And while everyone watches Diane, someone else will move the money.”
Emma looked at him.
“Who?”
Matthew slid a document across the table.
“The foundation's emergency trustee.”
Emma read the name.
Her face went pale.
“Diane.”
Matthew nodded.
“She appointed herself years ago.”
“So even from jail…”
“She controls the accounts.”
Michael clenched his jaw.
“How do we stop her?”
Emma looked at the document again.
“We don't.”
Michael stared at her.
Emma's voice was calm.
“We let her transfer everything.”
Matthew understood immediately.
“She'll expose herself.”
“Exactly.”
Sophie placed another file on the table.
“I found this in Diane's house.”
Emma opened it.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Emma as a child.
Michael as a teenager.
Matthew.
Clara.
David.
And Lily.
Emma's breathing stopped.
“The last one…”
It was Lily.
Taken only three days before the balcony incident.
From across the street.
Someone had been watching her daughter.
Emma's fingers tightened around the photograph.
“She had Lily followed.”
Matthew nodded.
“She needed to know when you were alone.”
Michael's expression darkened.
“She was planning another attempt.”
“No.”
Emma looked up.
“She already made the attempt.”
Silence.
The balcony.
The fall.
The scream.
Michael catching Lily.
Emma suddenly noticed something in the corner of the photograph.
A vehicle.
Black.
Parked across the street.
She zoomed in on the image.
A license plate.
She knew it.
Michael did too.
“That belongs to the foundation.”
Matthew stood.
“Then we have enough.”
Emma shook her head.
“Not yet.”
She turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
A single sentence.
IF LILY SURVIVES, ACTIVATE PLAN B.
Emma's blood ran cold.
“What is Plan B?”
Sophie slowly opened the final folder.
“I think this is it.”
Inside was a contract.
Emma read the first page.
Then the second.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Michael stepped closer.
Emma handed him the document.
“It isn't a custody agreement.”
Michael read silently.
Then his face went white.
“It is a guardianship transfer.”
Emma nodded.
“Diane had already prepared it.”
Michael's voice cracked.
“Whose guardianship?”
Emma pointed to the signature line.
His own name was there.
Michael Bennett.
Below it was Diane's signature.
And beneath that—
SOPHIE MORRIS.
Sophie stepped backward.
“No.”
Emma looked at her.
“You were supposed to become Lily's guardian.”
Sophie shook her head violently.
“I never signed that.”
“I know.”
Matthew took the document.
“Her signature is forged.”
Emma looked at him.
“Why would Diane forge Sophie's signature?”
Matthew stared at the page.
“Because she needed a Morris descendant.”
Emma understood.
Diane had built a legal trap.
If Emma disappeared, Sophie would become Lily's guardian.
Then Diane would control Sophie.
And through Sophie, control Lily.
But there was one problem.
Sophie had found them.
Matthew was alive.
Emma knew the truth.
Michael knew the truth.
And Lily was still alive.
The entire structure Diane had built was collapsing.
Suddenly, Michael's phone rang.
He answered.
“Michael Bennett.”
A voice spoke on the other end.
His expression changed.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then Michael slowly stood.
“What hospital?”
Emma watched him.
“What happened?”
Michael lowered the phone.
His face was pale.
“Diane was transferred.”
“To where?”
“The Morris Medical Center.”
Emma froze.
“That hospital has been closed for years.”
“I know.”
Matthew grabbed his coat.
“Then she isn't being transferred.”
Emma looked at him.
Matthew's voice became grim.
“She's going back to where this started.”
Sophie whispered:
“The original archive.”
Matthew nodded.
“And if Diane gets there first…”
Emma finished the sentence.
“She'll destroy everything.”
Emma picked up Lily's photograph.
For ten months, Diane had controlled the story.
The records.
The names.
The money.
The lies.
But now Emma finally understood something.
Diane's greatest mistake had not been trying to kill Lily.
It had been believing that fear would keep everyone silent.
Emma looked at Michael.
“Let's go.”
Michael nodded.
Matthew opened the door.
And Sophie followed.
None of them noticed the small red light blinking inside the folder.
A recording device.
Someone had planted it there.
And somewhere across the city—
Diane was listening.
May you like
Listening to every word.
And smiling.
