CHAP 19 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN
The courthouse was surrounded by cameras.
Olivia was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.
Evelyn begged her not to attend.
Olivia went anyway.
Not for revenge.
To testify.
Sebastian's attorneys tried to prevent it.
Failed.
In court, Olivia described the medical records.
The divorce papers.
The threats.
The fraudulent collateral.
The years of manipulation.
Then Sebastian's attorney asked the question everyone feared.
“Mrs. Hale, despite everything you've described, did my client love you?”
The courtroom became silent.
Olivia looked at Sebastian.
He looked back.
For the first time, there was no performance between them.
“Yes,” Olivia said.
A murmur moved through the room.
His attorney looked surprised.
Olivia continued.
“I believe he did.”
“Then isn't it possible—”
“No.”
The attorney stopped.
Olivia's voice remained calm.
“Love is not an exemption from accountability.”
The judge allowed the answer.
Olivia continued.
“A person can love you and still lie to you. Love you and exploit you. Love you and decide their ambition matters more than your safety. Understanding that does not require me to pretend the harm didn't happen.”
Sebastian lowered his head.
The testimony ended.
Outside, reporters shouted.
Olivia ignored them.
Halfway down the courthouse steps, she stopped.
Pain tightened across her abdomen.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Olivia?”
Another contraction.
Then another.
Her water broke beneath a thousand cameras.
Seven hours later, Olivia gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
She named her Eleanor Grace Hale.
Not because Sebastian requested it.
Because the name belonged to Olivia's mother too.
Sebastian learned through his attorney.
He did not call.
For once, he respected a boundary.
Two days later, he entered a guilty plea to multiple fraud and obstruction charges after prosecutors presented the final evidence.
He would serve several years in federal prison.
Daniel received a longer sentence.
Reeves's case continued.
Claire entered a cooperation agreement and later disappeared from Olivia's life.
Camille moved to Chicago.
Marcus became interim chief executive during Hale Meridian's restructuring.
Jonathan became simply Grandpa.
Not chairman.
Not protector.
Not decision-maker.
He visited only when Olivia invited him.
