CHAP 15 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE
Jonathan admitted he knew Eleanor had received threats.
He knew she believed she was being followed.
He told her not to go to the meeting.
She refused.
They fought.
“If Eleanor goes tonight, everything burns” meant the investigation would become public.
Not that he wanted her dead.
But Jonathan had done something unforgivable.
He had known one of Eleanor's cars had a maintenance issue.
He assumed she took another vehicle.
He never checked.
The car she drove was the one later found with damaged brake lines.
“Could you have stopped her?”
Olivia asked.
Jonathan cried.
For the first time in Olivia's life, she watched her father cry.
“Yes.”
The word shattered something.
Not murder.
Not conspiracy.
Failure.
Cowardice.
The unbearable knowledge that a different choice might have changed everything.
Olivia asked him to leave.
For days she spoke to no one except doctors and Evelyn.
She had won the company battle.
Lost her marriage.

She felt empty.
Sebastian sent no messages.
Then a package arrived.
Inside was the original notebook Stephen Hale kept.
Evelyn verified it.
One entry changed the case.
Stephen had written that Daniel's mechanic offered to “make Eleanor miss her meeting permanently.”
Stephen refused.
He warned Eleanor.
But someone else accepted.
A first name appeared.
Malcolm.
Dr. Malcolm Reeves.
Olivia stared.
Reeves had not merely fabricated her medical evidence.
He had been connected to Daniel eleven years earlier.
The old clue had new meaning.
Reeves had trained as an emergency physician before moving into private psychiatry.
His brother owned the auto shop listed on the suspicious invoice.
Everything converged.
Police arrested Reeves.
Under questioning, he talked.
Daniel paid him to arrange vehicle sabotage through his brother.
The intention, Reeves claimed, was to frighten Eleanor.
Not kill her.
The brakes failed on a wet highway.
Eleanor died.
Daniel had spent eleven years hiding it.
Sebastian discovered enough years later to blackmail him.
Jonathan covered financial crimes but never knew who damaged the car.
