CHAPTER 3: THE BUTTON UNDER THE BED

Two days later, I was moved to a private recovery wing.

No visitors were allowed. No exceptions.

But on the third night, I woke to a quiet knock.

Not the hospital kind.

A familiar rhythm.

Three taps. Pause. Two taps.

My heart stuttered.

Only Caleb had ever knocked like that.

I froze.

“Ellie,” a voice said softly from the hallway.

Impossible.

I pushed myself upright, clutching Grace while Noah slept beside me.

The door opened slowly.

And a man stepped in.

Not a ghost.

Not a dream.

A federal agent holding a file with my name on it.

“I’m sorry,” he said gently. “We should have told you sooner.”

My throat tightened. “Told me what?”

He opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Caleb in uniform I had never seen.

Caleb at briefing tables.

Caleb standing beside men in government insignia.

And one final page.

STATUS: DECEASED (UNCONFIRMED)

I stared at it.

“What does unconfirmed mean?”

The agent hesitated.

“Your husband’s accident was not fully investigated at the scene. We have reason to believe he survived the initial crash.”

My world tilted.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

The agent’s voice softened.

“He left the rail yard two hours before the reported time of death. And someone used his credentials after the crash to access your family’s financial systems.”

My pulse thundered in my ears.

“Then where is he?”

The agent closed the file gently.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

I looked down at my sleeping twins.

And for the first time since the knock on my door four days ago, grief turned into something else.

Something sharper.

Something alive.

Because if Caleb was still out there…

May you like

Then everything that happened in that hospital room—

was only the beginning.
